Jesus. One quite a few occasions, I have worked with older men who would say to younger guys "thank you young man" or just in general say something like "how was your weekend young man?" and in no way did I once think there was something wrong with it.
I use to work with one guy who called everyone "tiger" and that was annoying as frick, but funny at the same time because we would count the number of times he would say "tiger" in a day.. But he ended up getting fired for having inappropriate material on his computer. One day the manager, HR and one of the IT guys went into his office, shut the door.. About 10 mins later the manager and IT guy walked out while the HR lady stayed in. The door was closed again and about 15 mins later they both walked out, he was carrying two boxes and we never saw him again. Everyone asked the IT guy and all he would say was "he had inappropriate material on his computer". He wouldn't say if it was porn or what type of porn.. Or anything.. Anyway.. That's besides the point.
As the sexual assault/harassment accusations continue to snowball, it could be a dangerous situation. All of a sudden, you have a very gray area of what is sexual harassment. Calling someone a "young lady", IMO at least, isn't in no way sexual harassment, but you really never know what someone will take as sexual harassment.
MOTHERfrickER!
I got to the third paragraph before I realized this was an OweO story and I was never going to get to anything resembling novel thought or a point.

In my years of working for the government, I had two HR complaints filed against me that really stood out:
1. A female supervisor who I had constant problems with (because she was grossly incompetent) filed a complaint against me because she said "Good Morning" and I didn't reply. HR asked why not and I said because I don't speak to her any more because I know she is looking for an excuse to use it against me and had previously filed on me for things I know I didn't say. So now NOT speaking to her is also an issue? They closed the complaint.
2. Female colleague filed a complaint that I got her pregnant on a work trip. I am not making this up. She got passed out drunk at a restaurant and ended up with a kid that wasn't her husbands. She thought I did it. I was cleared not only because (thank god) I made sure there was a witness (front desk clerk at hotel) who I made go with me when I carried this girl to her room AND... I had already had my nuts cut two years earlier. HR asked for my medical records on that and I told them to get a subpoena.
The person earlier in the thread who said we have to quit entertaining this BS is correct. The whiners will continue to push as long as it is allowed. If there is legitimate harassment occurring, fire the person doing it. If someone wants to make frivolous complaints, fire them and move on.

She must be like 22. Give it a few years and she’ll be begging the old man to call her young.

We have a 71 year old man that is a consultant on certain cases. He literally said "thank you young lady" to her on the phone for getting his time entered, and apparently wasn't the first time he said it to her. She complained to the boss it was demeaning, she's a professional and expects to be treated as such. I mean really? "Young lady"?
Why would you work at a place that employs rapists and sexual assaulters?

It's not sexist but it is condescending/patronizing and thus inappropriate.
