and for the record, I said it was a bad idea to expel anyone for this. Although if I were the students in question I'd already be looking for a new school anyway.

OU freshman Joe Mixon was suspended last season for knocking out a white female. There was a video. Glad to see the university react so swiftly in his case. He is now able to begin participating in team activities. Once again proving that simply saying the n-word is worse than knocking out a female!

This is my biggest issue with the expulsion. I bet they aren't expelling all the students That committed battery over the past few years.

Or the Acadians? Please.. In the expulsion from Nova Scotia, babies were thrown into bonfires in front of their families, adult men were killed, women and children separated and put on boats to different parts of the world.. No ethnicity is in the US without their struggle.. And if there was a chant saying "No Coonass'll be an SAE, you think I'd care?"

Dorial Green-Beckham had allegations for violence against women. OU had no problem letting him enroll.

This is...honestly... reprehensible to me as well. The only thing they have in their defense was the fact that neither were enrolled at Oklahoma at the time of those offenses.

Read The Washington Post article...

I did. Are you suggesting you can do anything you want as long as you are speaking and then claim "First Amendment" protection.

Their removal was based on the students leading a chant which created a hostile educational environment. I think there is a distinction.

RACISM UPDATE,

WHy is it people can rally over this, but they sit on their thumbs while numbskulls rape the constitution and put it in a blender.

how can we NOT hold them accountable?! but we can toss misguided youths to the wolves with no forgiveness

who are the real idiots?

To think that skin color makes a human being superior, or inferior is absolutely insane. Yet highly educated people believe it to be true.

No highly educated person thinks the only difference between races is their skin color. The average Swedish person is taller than the average Chinese person, is that only because of their skin color?

OK. Seriously, can we dispense with this? No one, literally no one, in this thread has stated this. Why does it continue to be brought up? Do you think this adds to your argument? I don't get it.

I was reading the ACLU of Oklahoma FB page and they have an article up about the statement released regarding the SAE incident. Here is part of that statement:

quote:

We applaud President Boren’s aggressive response to the SAE’s actions, and we encourage the OU administration to be equally aggressive in ensuring that the due process rights of students remain protected throughout any disciplinary processes against Fraternity members. The deep-rooted problem of racism will not be solved by discipline alone, but by open and honest dialogue and an accounting of where we are and where we need to go not just in our universities, but in the communities university students will one day lead.

ACLU of Oklahoma Issues Statement on OU Fraternity Closure After Racist Chant on Anniversary of Selma March

But I found an older article on the ACLU website that contradicts their views on the SAE chant and asked them about it:
quote:

Many universities, under pressure to respond to the concerns of those who are the objects of hate, have adopted codes or policies prohibiting speech that offends any group based on race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.

That's the wrong response, well-meaning or not. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects speech no matter how offensive its content. Speech codes adopted by government-financed state colleges and universities amount to government censorship, in violation of the Constitution. And the ACLU believes that all campuses should adhere to First Amendment principles because academic freedom is a bedrock of education in a free society.

Hate Speech on Campus

They deleted my comment.

Mixon's incident occured at end of July. He was on campus. I am not condoning any of this, but breaking four bones in a girl's face is definitely grounds for expulsion.

Pretty telling if you ask me. When I see a video of a black person talking about Crackers am I hurt by this? Absolutely not! Is the girl that got knocked out by Joe Mixon hurt......

Right! Highly educated are racist only because other races have different skin color. Keep believing that.

I'm not convinced CptBengal doesn't believe this. He has been making blanket statements along those lines and has not answered me on whether he thinks a student is allowed to make defamatory or slanderous statements without discipline.

Not to mention he's been howling about freedom of speech WELL before the kids were expelled (which is when most of us drew the line)..like when SAE and U of O shut down the fraternity.
