We did a project at school on this with the NTSB report. A lot of things happened that caused this collision
- it was local custom for the ferry’s to give way to the ships. Nothing was specifically set in the inland rules of the road, but they was changed after the incident and the section on narrow channels was added.

- at the time of the collision there were no deckhands on deck, supposedly they were all down below or in the house serving food and drinks and not serving as designated lookouts

- the legal limit to drive at the time was I believe .9 but the ferry Capt. BAC was .8. They ended up having to used fluid from his eye to make that determination because his body has been in the water for so long. Also when they found his body he had an unknown female passenger with him

- also it is believed that the glass in the wheel house of the Ferry was so thick that The Capt. couldn’t hear any signals from the Frosta

My dad was a state policeman at the time and was called out to report to the crash site and assist with any rescue/recovery. I remember it was very cold that morning for some reason. Just one of those days in my childhood that stuck with me for some reason. One of my classmates dad was on the ferry headed to work and died.

for years prior to the sinking, kids were allowed in the pilot house and allowed to steer under the supervision of the captain

This accident started the push for more bridges across the Mississippi River in a desire to make ferry travel across the river obsolete. The Gramercy Bridge and St Francisville Bridge are a direct result of this accident.

Yeah...I took that Ferry a ton of times before "The new bridge" was finished. I'm sure I've got photos around with me wearing football padded pants standing on the levee waiting for the ferry with the bridge under construction in the background going to play ball in NORCO or something.

I remember hearing about this, but I'm almost certain I didn't know about it when I was a kid crossing it.

I was living in Ama at the time, and we used that ferry often. Thankfully, not that day.

I wondered how so many people died from just a sinking ferry on the river until I read this:

quote:

The ship rolled the ferry over and sucked it underneath for a bit before it popped back up a few hundred yards downstream.

This would definitely knock most of the people out and trap them underwater long enough to drown.

i'd imagine the fear of being crushed between vehicles had something to do with his decision

It seems like there was enough time for people to get out of their cars and get a life jacket on

I feel like most people would just be sitting there not believing anything would happen until it was too late. People take for granted that things will just work. They probably all watched as it was happening then when they realized it was going to actually hit there wasn't time to put on life jackets.

I rode that ferry alot when I was a kid. I remember being scared to death on that ferry. I also remember coming too close to much larger vessels. That's probably why I was so scared to ride it.
