I like the Black Bay also, but prefer the inhouse movement.
I'm the exact opposite. I was going to suggest a Pelagos Black or a Black Bay Black. I prefer the look of the Black Bay Black, but it doesn't have the in house movement of the Pelagos.
If I were shopping in that price range, I'd probably get one of those two watches.

Oh yeah we can all afford that
Eta more than one, you mean you don't even have one

The navy bezel Black Bay is so awesome and I'm sure the ETA is a very solid movement, probably on par with the pellagos....that being said, why not just put an in house movement??
There have been rumors that Tudor is soon going to put an in house movement in the Black Bay.

Back to the OP, a Nomos Tangomat Datum is right at $4k. It's a beautiful watch.
I prefer the look of the Ahoi, but they are both pretty awesome watches.

I priced one in Grand Cayman last week. I think it was the same model. It was a little under $5k, no tax.

I'll sell your wife my Rolex Sub 16610 for $4500.....new one retails for $8500
Wearing my Marathon right now and would likely just role it into another low cost option and buy another toy.

So you're judging me for making a judgment statement? GFY
BTW, I gave him two good choices, and I do like watches myself.
Where did I judge you. Just saying that your opinion wasn't the only one. You wouldn't care about an heirloom watch, I would...no big deal.

Wow, some haters up in here!!! Sounds like they mad they will never own a nice watch and taking it out on others.
When I started this thread, I already had Breitling in mind, but found out (from this thread) that they out source their movements, so they maybe out.
I have never liked Tags. When my wife first told me that she was going to get me a nice watch for my 50, she mentioned Tag. To me, Tag is a poor man's Rolex. I talked to the guy at Lee Michaels and asked him about the value Rolex, Tag, Breitling, and other watches retain. He said Tag was the worst. You pay $1200-$2000 for a Tag, you wouldn't be able to sell it a year later for $500.
I do like the birth year idea, but still don't really want to go with Rolex.
Where in BR are some good places to try on some watches. Patton's (my jeweler) quit carrying high end watches. They just carry Citizen and a couple other brands around $1000.
How about others that have not been mentioned, Tiffany or Jules Madare (local jeweler that makes watches)?
There have been a lot of brands mentioned here I will look into.

Lee Michaels has Rolex, Omega, Tag and I think Baume and Mercier.

Not everyone buys a watch looking to sell it later.
Any watch I ever buy I plan to keep.

I'm sorry but this just blows my mind

I kind of think it says something about the desirability or general respect for the brand that Tag drops value so quickly compared to Rolex, Omega, etc.

I have a Tag quartz chronograph that was the first nice watch Ive ever had. I didnt take it off my wrist for 3 years. Then I bought a Seamaster Planet Ocean about 4 years ago, and i would bet anything that I havent worn that Tag more than 5 times since. The Tag is a good watch, and I never had any issues with it. But it doesnt touch the Omega.
In my biased opinion, Id suggest an Omega. Got mine at Lee Michaels, btw.

I think the residual value of Rolex watches are GROSSLY overstated. Some models, yea...but look at online shops, eBay and in every pawn shop and those things will NEVER sell for what those people believe they are worth. I don't want them so IDGAF, but I get a kick out of it.

At least three of their models are entirely in-house designed and produced movements. Since ETA isn't sourcing movements to companies not under the Swatch group I'd expect fewer and fewer companies will use ETA movements and more will produce in-house.

Which models are you talking about?
Posted on 2/17/16 at 4:48 pm to GynoSandberg
The desirable ones...IDK, I think damn near all of the are in poor style. Just saying that there are more unsold used Rolex watches listed at values that the seller will never get than are countable. The only thing rare about Rolex watches are seeing one with decent style.

I'm personally not a huge fan of Rolex, mostly for style reasons, either, but I have a lot more respect for Rolex as a brand than I do for Tag. Maybe it's misplaced hate for Tag. Idk.
