Civilian contractor.

The last time I heard about this was about 4-5 years ago. Blackwater had closed but a new company had started. The new company was paying $300k for a 1 year contract. It was 3 months in country, then 3 months off. There were also tremendous tax advantages.

The guys I knew that were doing it were buying real estate in their home towns with the money they earned.

Go to school and get a practical degree in something you think you would enjoy doing for a living. The Post 9/11 G.I. Bill is amazing. It will not only pay for all your tuition and fees but pay you E5 level BAH each month, for me it was 1300 each month, plus around 500 towards books, which isn't much because books are ridiculously expensive but it helps. If you decide to work while going to school you will be doing pretty good for yourself. So yeah go to school and learn something useful, have fun, make a little money, and slay some college poon.

My five year contract is coming to an end in 8 months and I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do when I get out. I just know I don't want to stay in. I have a secret clearance and currently a Sgt (E-5) in the USMC. I have a few college credits, some gained through service, some through actual online classes. How hard is it going to college after 5 years of pretty much zero formal education? Any success stories? I'm a grunt also, so nothing to really transfer to the civilian world.

If you live near a Boeing facility...apply there!! Especially if its within the Boeing BDS division (Boeing Defense Systems). I am a veteran of almost the same resume. I got hired at Boeing because of being a vet. Because Boeing works with and manufactures the American Military's defense system equipment, your Security Clearance will be of great value to you!! Use that to your advantage. Your Security Clearance is = a college degree in many aspects. Just my two cents. Good luck to you in whatever you choose to do and thank you for your service to our country!

Not true

I was just offered a contractor job as a medic in Kabul, 100 days on 35 days off, 100k minimum for a year.

I did 8 yeas and was medically discharged as a SSgt with a secret clearance.

Lucky enough to get a decent paying banking job while I went to school, and raising a kid.

It wasn't fun, and it wasn't easy, but I had to do it. My MOS really was not going to get me anything in the real world other than UPS or FedEx jobs.

If you had anything higher than a secret clearance, or maybe even with the secret clearance, there are tons of contracting jobs on the east coast\DC area with intel and counter intel companies. I know a few people who did that and are making good money.

I know an English woman doing exactly that job, though I think her on/off days may be different. She seems to like it.

If you want an education goes use your G.I. Bill. If you've done a few tours and have 100% of your Post 9/11 you'll be set. Get a part time job working 20 hours a week and you'll be good on $.

Go enjoy life for a little while bro. You've earned it.

Also, if you still want to serve, the National Guard usually has Tuition Exemption and will pay 100% of you tuition per semester. If you go Reserves, they'll pay anywhere from 60-100% depending on your TIS.

There's no shame in a Marine being a waiter while he is going to school. Nobody shoots at you, it is air conditioned, it pays the bills, and anyone who bitches at you is still in the minor league compared to those that have yelled at you.

Thanks for your service.

You'll thank me later.

Yeah Young College girls and getting an education. This is a no brainer young man! Just get a degree in a field that will get you a real job is my advice.

Nothing is keeping you from taking advantage that GI Bill and going to school. I'd take a little time and figure out what you wanna do and then pursue it.

I did 4 years in the Army then went to school.
It wasn't that hard transitioning back to a school environment and I got my Bachelor's degree.

Army College Fund and GI Bill made it a breeze because I did not have to work except when and where I wanted to. (summer jobs and worked at bars)

I also did 4 years in the National Guard because they offer tuition exemption to state universities.

I will second the recommendations above to look at Process Technology courses and also consider trade schools if you enjoy working with your hands. Electrical and Instrumentation are excellent choices.

Listen man I know you are sick of the bullshite but DO NOT GET ALL THE WAY OUT! There is an annutity out there with your name on it.

Tired of the Corps? go Army Reserve or National Guard, its easy compared to the Corps, in 15 years you will have what nobody else your age will have, a real no shite retirement and a lifetime of medical benefits.

College will be easy because you have the discipline to study and go to class from time to time and thats all you need to do. That also applies to picking up college women, to easy. Enjoy.
