Fiddlehead,
I got my degree while serving 14 years.
I ended up going to med school in my 30's, so you shouldn't have a problem going back to school.
I have a friend who trains ets-ing soldiers/marines in the steel industry. The school is in Texas. It is called ACS.
Those guys make some good money.
Let me know if you are interested.

Went to work for Xerox on an AF base. Quit a year later and went to school.
Went back after almost 20 and it took some getting used to, I don't want to be negative so I'll leave it at that.

How hard is it going to college after 5 years of pretty much zero formal education? Any success stories?

College then med school. I originally joined with a military career in mind but some events in one of my deployments changed my mind. I had no idea what I wanted to do as I was accustomed to functioning in a high level unit so I decided to try to become a doctor...there are no college grads in my family and certainly no doctors, but the drive and determination I learned in the military served me well.
Just make a lofty goal and do what it takes to accomplish it. If I can make it to where I am today, anybody can. It just takes the right frame of mind.

After discharge from the Air Force I started working at Home Depot part time going to school full time on the GI Bill. After about a year and a half of University I transferred to a technical college full time and started working full time at Home Depot. After graduating from the Technical College, I left Home Depot and started a career in IT, been progressing with my career since 2001.
Going to college after being out of school is not difficult. However, it was difficult for me to live a college lifestyle being 25 years old.

I contracted in Afghanistan for a few years, saved money, and went back to school. When I decided I was done with that, I used what I had saved to start my own company.
What are your career interests?
*edit
Guess I should have read the entire thread first. Being single, you have nothing but opportunity. Don't waste your money until you have more than enough to waste. I saw a ton of guys that got a little bump in pay when they got out and blew it on a truck or something stupid.
Go to college for something that interests you and get some certifications. With your clearance, don't overlook contracting positions. There's a significant bump in pay and a relaxation of reqs just because you have that.
