OT Vets, What'd you do when you got out?

My five year contract is coming to an end in 8 months and I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do when I get out. I just know I don't want to stay in.
I have a secret clearance and currently a Sgt (E-5) in the USMC.
I have a few college credits, some gained through service, some through actual online classes.
How hard is it going to college after 5 years of pretty much zero formal education?
Any success stories?
I'm a grunt also, so nothing to really transfer to the civilian world.

I can't give much useful advice, but thanks for your service.

Uh, law enforcement. Civilian contractor. If I had to do it all over again, when I got out I'd went and took a Process Tech course for a job at Shell, Marathon ect.
Thanks for your service Devil Dog.

College will be a no brainer. Get in there. Get a degree. I know more than one marine vet that utilized some housing program. All these guys are local real estate tycoons now. Owning and renting multiple properties. Not quite sure of what they did, but if you can do that. Do it.

Have you seen how law enforcement is being treated these days? Have you seen what they make? No way. The heyday of civilian contracting is over. Wages are crap and the jobs are few and far between.
GI BILL. GO TO SCHOOL AND GET A DEGREE. No question.

I did my MOS when I got out and work as an Air Traffic Controller. What is your situation? Single? Wife?Children? If you have little or no obligations I would recommend find a career that you want to get into and get into a degree program at a good University. The new GI Bill is great and you can apply for grants along with other financial aid and get a part time job on the side. I tell friends getting out that it is a crime to let that GI Bill you earned go to waste. You get paid to go to college which is awesome.

He's a Marine, I know for a fact and personal experience that he's been treated worse.

I'm not sure you're looking in the right places. I still get emails ect offering pretty damn good $$

if it's possible for you, go college, get a degree, and freakin enjoy yourself! You deserve it

Single with no kids, I think college is my best bet. Again, not sure how I'd do jumping right back into school. I was thinking maybe community college just to get back in the swing of things

Majoring in engineering, physics and other sciences will be pretty challenging for most people unless they took all the math they could in high school and excelled at it, but it is still doable if you are highly motivated. Almost anything else in my opinion is not much more difficult than high school.

Hence why I recommended a tech school, 2 years and you got a job. In my area they -Marathon,Shell,ect- pull you out of school before you even graduate.
Good luck either way you go Sgt, again thanks for your service.

Oh and also take advantage of transition programs NOW where there is plenty of great information such as helping you prepare a resume, veterans benefits you are entitled to, and potential medical disabilities you may have. You also can get a military ID when you get out because you still have 3 year obligation in the IRR. Seriously get as much info as you can and seriously take advantage of the civilian transition programs.

Three years at a major university. Drafted in what would have been my junior year. Infantry training, Viet Nam for a year in the infantry and back in the USA. Finished my degree program at a different school after being discharged from the military and then went to law school. Don't regret a day of it. (Well, maybe a couple of bad times.)

If there's any part of you that loves it stay in you will be miserable on the outside.

Advice... stay in. 14 more years will pass in what will seem like 5. Then you'll draw federal retirement and still have your TSC to work the civilian sector.
