require a year-long course in finance. We spend years on algebra, for example, but kids graduate not knowing the difference between an IRA and a 401k. It's criminal.
It's an elective at Dutchtown HS for the past few years. All of my kids will be signing up for that one.
Sadly, it's currently being taught by a coach.

Financial Literacy: This course focuses on personal finance, covering topics such as understanding paychecks and income, budgeting, banking, credit, loans, buying a house or car, insurance, and investments. It counts as a math credit for the TOPS Tech Diploma and an elective for the TOPS University Diploma.

Restore the nuclear family, end entitlements, promote Christian values throughout society. The state of public education in some areas is a symptom, it's not the disease.

Teachers need to be gods of their content rather than facilitating so called "student led learning".
Additionally, We need to seriously differentiate between education for the sake of education and education for the sake of gaining employment.

Spinoff of today's thread about teachers being cranky headed back to the classroom after "60 days off". We at the OT have used our powers for good & for evil over the last 3+ decades. I say we use this thread, at least, for good: How can we actually "save" &/or improve public education in the U.S. ?
End it, save for the means proven indigent.

I’m a teacher. My last day was June 3, I’ve been back since July 14. Where’s the rest of the 60 days I had off?

Glad Louisiana is catching up 30 years later.

I'm slightly worried that may be the case here also.

If it was a personal choice, then you can't complain.

Remove problem kids from the classroom and put them in the military

I've posted this before, so Ill simply copy and paste.
Education at every level is bloated and broken. At what point do we let the grown-ups take over?
How about we bring in some competent white-collar professionals with common sense and a spine? Start with mandatory audits—top to bottom at every level. No one is safe. Everything is transparent.
ISD Superintendent pulling in $750K for a three-day workweek? Fired. We can find a dozen former executives who’d do it better for half the pay and wouldn’t need summer vacation.
Two full-time assistants for the drama department? What is this—Broadway? Fired.
“Behavioral Assistant Vice Principal”? Sounds like a made-up role based on feeeewings. Fired.
Director of Equity and Inclusion with a $200K salary and no students in their office all year? Fired.
“Community Enrichment Strategist” on payroll? Fired.
Oh, and the $80,000 budget for “student wellness murals” and “therapeutic gardening”? Cute. Delete it from the books and fire who ever initiated the grants.
We don’t need more consultants, safe-space coordinators, or vibe curators in education. We need teachers who teach, students who learn, and leadership that’s accountable.
It’s that fricking simple. But noooo….we need to subsidize grown adults with meaningless degrees and put them in charge of our children’s education.

Rework math requirements in high school to require a year-long course in finance. We spend years on algebra, for example, but kids graduate not knowing the difference between an IRA and a 401k. It's criminal.
This harms the students at the higher end. Requiring them to take a year long course on financially literacy means they won’t be able to take an upper level math (advanced calculus, trigonometry, etc.)

1. There should be 5 classes per day - Math, English/Spelling, Science, History and Physical Education
2. The classes should be taught by rote from K to 7
3. Removal of the teachers' unions
4. Free enterprise should be a mandated class
5. End all social advancement promotions
6. Financial Literacy - There should be a Financial Literacy class mandated for graduation that includes: Earning, saving, budgeting, spending, investing, loans, credit cards, insurance, education and careers (the ROI on degrees and the financial commitment to repay the loans) and taxes. Specifically, students need to understand the amount of their earnings that are taken by the government in local state and federal taxes and what it's used to fund.

1 thing that baffles me is how in any state/district in the U.S. that we have School Board members serving in roles with 0-5 years of classroom experience.
How in the world do we not have School Boards full of teachers with experience in the classroom of 15+ years as well as at least a Masters Degree in Education?

Not really. Any math should be able to be used in the spot of an elective. Zero reason that academically gifted students can't stack classes.
