Last year around this time my 2 year old vehicle had a bad battery. Replaced it and everything was fine. I just had same issue happen again late last week. Had the dealership run a diagnostic and they told me the battery is dead again.

Is my car killing the battery or is it common for batteries to fail like that?

To clarify, I did not use the dealership to change the battery the first, so it's not like it's one battery manufacturer's.

Once I change the battery, I'll have them hook it up again.

You might have a phantom amperage draw. I have one. Can't find it. It's annoying as frick. Slow enough that I can let my shite sit for three days, but fast enough where I can't leave it for five days.

Another possibility is your wiring is dirty or worn out.

Another possibility is you just got a bad battery.

Put that battery on a trickle charger, and if you get a new one, make sure it has a solid warranty that is easy to use (Diehard Platinum)

alternator's bad

This is immediately what I thought.

My very first car ( 03 Mitsu Eclipse GT ) ate two batteries in a year, changed the alternator, and voila no problems anymore.

Today's batteries should last a minimum of 4 years. It is possible for one to go bad sooner, but if two go bad in the same vehicle in a short period of time, then the battery is merely a symptom of something else going on in the electrical system.

First place to look is the alternator.

Hook a test light up to the battery, then start pulling fuses.

I don't think it's a phantom draw because it's been sudden both times.

Drove to work without issue, dead by lunch.

The battery has a good warranty, so I'm not worried about that.

If an alternator goes out, even a brand new battery will hardly get you anywhere (couple of hours of driving).
It's not going to be the battery in such short of time.
Go to Autozone for free rest of the alt's output. Should be 12.5 volt output plus. . dont buy it there though.

I have one of these too and it is so fricking frustrating. Once, I let my car sit for three days and it died, and once it sat for 10 days while on vacation and it started fine. Phantom draw, happens inconsistently, and impossible to find where it's coming from.

I agree since most battery warranties are 3 years

With the car running....unhook the negative cable....if the car dies, chances are you’ve got a bad alternator.

Isn't this slightly dangerous?

Found this:

quote:

Your battery does more than just provide electricity. It also shorts AC, spikes and transients to ground. Removing the battery from the circuit allows those spikes and transients to travel around, endangering every semiconductor circuit in your car. The ECU, the speed sensitive steering, the memory seat adjustments, the cruise control, and even the car's stereo. Even if your computers and stereo remain intact, in a great many cases removing the battery burns out the diodes in the alternator, necessitating a new alternator. If disconnecting the battery interferes with the voltage regulator's control voltage input, it's possible for the alternator voltage to go way over the top (I've heard some say hundreds of volts), frying everything. Even the initial premise was wrong. If you disconnect the battery and the car conks out, you don't know if it conked out due to insufficient alternator current, or whether the resulting transients caused your ECU (the car's computer, which controls fuel mixture, timing, and much more) to spit out bad data, shutting down the car. Nobody should EVER run your engine without a battery.

Check and see if your vehicle has a "battery saver relay".

Mine was bad. It would drag and shite would stay on when my door opened that shouldn't. Contact would stay pulled in and I'd notice my headlights were dimmer for a bit after it setup along with clock problems

Changed relay. No problems
