when exposed to so many colds, flu, etc? Colds spread through the office pretty easily despite hand sanitizers, Lysol, Clorox wipes, etc. Are you guys sick more often, but its less visible or do you guys have some cleaning regimen to reduce your risk?

I've somewhat built up an immunity of sorts.

My first year as a pediatric nurse....I got sick ALL THE FREAKING TIME. It sucked.

I still get sick now, but not as much as I used to. Also...I guarantee nurses/doctors/those working in hospitals or other medical type places wash their hands WAYYYYY more than those working in an office environment. We also wipe down all surfaces in our nurse's station(phones, computers, etc) at least twice a shift as well with some heavy duty cleaning wipes so that helps.

ETA: Also flu shots are MANDATORY now where I work at so maybe that helps? And we wear masks/gowns/gloves for any patients that are sick.

Nurses are so under appreciated.

Just thought I would say that.

Take elderberry syrup. Everyone else will be sick and you will be fine. Been doing it for years.

Why can't you add teachers to that list as well?

The ones that are really underappreciated....nursing assistants. They make a nurse's job so much easier but are many times treated horribly by nursing staff. Yeah they many not have the education level of a nurse or other medical workers....but they do all the dirty work. We've been short staffed lately and had to work without nursing assistants many times at work the past few months...I now have a MUCH greater appreciation for them now.

After a certain amount of years and being sick all the time, as another poster said, I rarely get sick now.

Yeah teachers have it bad. Yall can't just throw a mask on when your kids start hacking up lungs in the classroom

I see a patient with a runny nose or the first cough....mask and gloves on STAT.

damn good point Pec. Children are little crock pots of illness constantly incubating some hideous virus or infection.

Nurse- do you really think its an immunity build up or just the sanitary conditions. I'm fighting a cold right now that I know I got from airline travel last week. I just don't see how you guys can have sick people breathing all over you and not get it yourselves.

Doctors get flu shots and have built up a natural immunity, which they pass on to the nurses through their semen.

I really think it's a combination of both.

I mean...I still get sick and I'm sure it's from some kid at work, but nowhere near as often as I did my first year or two as a nurse.

It was bad that first year. I must have gotten several colds, strep throat, 3 different stomach bugs, and even ringworm a couple times from a few kids.

I have also been taking prenatal vitamins for a few years now because I knew I wanted to get pregnant soon. I used to be bad about taking vitamins before. I also take daily vitamin C as well. So maybe that also helps.

Facebook likes carry strong healing power. So nurses build an immunity throughout the year with posts about how hard they work and how much they love their patients. Then when they get sick, they post about how sick they are and how hard they work. The likes flood in and they are healed.

They feed on the essences of healthy babies during the night.

It's a well known fact.

Statistics released in March, 2014 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services revealed that the flu vaccine remains the top vaccine causing injuries which are being compensated through vaccine court, and that Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a crippling disease, remains the top injury being awarded compensation due to the seasonal flu vaccine.

Still doesn't stop most hospitals making it mandatory.

Another hospital I worked a nursing job at(I no longer work there cause of school)....if you didn't get your flu shot...you were fired.

My last job (last year) was at a Hospital in TX in the IT field and it was optional to get, but on hiring when they drug tested, tb tested, they recommended it, and if you didnt get it you had to wear a mask in the hospital.

I had to watch my grandfather die of that horrible syndrome. Most everything I've read online says its hereditary. Wouldn't get one if you put a gun to my head.
