till doesn't stop most hospitals making it mandatory.
Another hospital I worked a nursing job at(I no longer work there cause of school)....if you didn't get your flu shot...you were fired.
That sounds extreme. We either get it or wear a mask 6 months out of the year. ( think it's aug-mar)

if you didnt get it you had to wear a mask in the hospital.
That is the policy at my current job. I'm claustrophobic as hell. No way I can wear a mask for 12+ hours straight from October until March/April.

Most hospitals around Austin you have the choice of a mask or the vaccine .

I have noticed, after having three kids, that we don't get sick as much. I am assuming your body builds up immunity very quickly.

it's a flu shot not a measles vaccine. relax.

I've been a respiratory therapist for 25 years, I didn't start to get sick until my kids went to school...

There are a couple nurses at work that are VERY anti flu vaccine. They are avoiding the vaccine for now, I'm just waiting until they are made to wear the mask. I just roll my eyes behind their backs when they go on their anti flu shot rants.
I really have no issue getting a flu shot each year. I just make sure to get it when I have a few days off of work after in case I feel achy or get a low grade fever. I did get sick the week I got mine. But...I had been taking care of a lot of kids with human rhinovirus that week so I'm not tinfoil hat enough to think the shot actually got me sick.

Pillars of health:
1. diet - keep processed carbs to a minimum (add healthy fats), intermittent fasting
2. maximize eustress - exercise (low volume, high intensity)
3. minimize distress - reduce TV, social media, avoid chronic low intensity things (including traditional cardio). Yep, I said it.
4. manage residual stress - mindfullness and meditation, spiritual practices
5. 6 to 7.5 hours of sleep per night (individually varies)
Do these and you will be more resilient in many areas (including immune function)

Everyone needs to practice good hand hygiene. That has to be part of the culture.
edit: oh and also, NY state made flu vaccinations mandatory, but you can get an exemption if you agree to wear a mask through the entire flu season. Most people get it but anyone who doesn't want one can just wear a mask. That cuts down on flu transmission (it's mostly for the sake of our patients though because we don't want to pass the flu to someone who's got a compromised immune system)

January 1st of every year I walk straight in and lick all the buttons on the elevator.

But our immune systems are outstanding.
Wife, a teacher, had a parent that was a doctor and he told her that he is never sick. She asked how he does it and he said to never touch your face.

I don't get exposed to colds anymore than an office worker. Fortunately you can't catch COPD, Cardiac disease, morbid obesity or cancer....that's the type shite I see daily in adult acute care. You aren't getting an ICU bed for colds...but like nurse said, I wash my hands constantly because getting c-diff would suck.

At work now we are seeing a ton of babies with parainfluenza. Only a few kids with actual flu. And of course it seems like everyone has human rhinovirus on top of it. RSV is just starting to trickle in as well. We always get several refugees as well that may possibly have TB. We only have one negative pressure room on the floor though so can only have one TB patient at a time.

The first year I was a peds ICU I was sick all the time like lsunurse said. After that, it got a whole lot better. Now, I work in the OR but am around snotty kids all the time and still don't get sick. Probably a combination of being immunized, eating clean--ish, and exercising.
The flu shot is a scam. Every year it's less than 40% effective because it is not the correct vaccine of the more popular strain and the only reason hospitals mandate it is because medicaid/medicare reimburses at a higher rate if over a certain percentage of employees get the flu shot.
