I thought I could use LI to keep up with HS classmates. Wrong.

Not today anyway. You might like having all those contacts one day.

I question people who don't have a LinkedIn acct.
Eh, all the active people on LinkedIn that I see are self-help entrepreneur types whose lives are more about the status of being entrepreneurs than than they are about actually creating or running ventures.
Most professional types I know have accounts, they're just not that active. It's so you can find contact info for people you don't like enough to befriend on other networks.

Mine comes up with nothing when I Google my name. As long as they can't figure out my TD handle, I'm mysterious as frick

Exactly.
My profile pic is 5 years old, or whenever I joined.

Might be people in youre email address book. You can send invites to everyone in youre saved email addresses.

I got my current job through LinkedIn. A lot of smaller companies will recruit on there because it's inexpensive. A lot of applicants if you're trying to land a job at a large company come through LinkedIn though.

I had >600 connections and deleted my account last month. Completely pointless.

Here are some examples of the random invites I had when I didn't have an account:
Dirt bike rider in California
Insurance salesman in Chicago
CPA in Minnesota
Stryker girl in Raleigh

Why should I have a profile?
The only use I get out of it is to see what someone looks like before I meet them. Surprises the frick out of some people when you can recognize them by name and you haven't even met them yet.

Couldn't because I never had an account and don't care to. Other than forums, I have no social media accounts

My last two jobs have came through recruiters on linked in. Even if your not looking for a job and you are not retired you should be on linked In. JMHO

I was told by executives that they would rather recruit people who have jobs (linked In) than take applications from those that are currently unemployed
