Pretty much every semi-technical outdoor brand or retailer is, sadly, unless devoted 100% to hunting.

Beyond, Arcteryx, maybe a few others that don’t outwardly put it in your face.

Someone mentioned REI, which is among the absolute worst.

Maybe they should source from USA manufacturing

I wish there were more options here, but it’s just not sustainable for most businesses

Same NB shoes made in US are 100% more. Same for a Beyond jacket.

Their fit is terrible.

I had some pants that were really comfortable, and had a pull over one time that was my go to for a couple winters, but their shirts sucked. It seemed like the collars of the button down shirts sat too high or something. Been a while since I wore one.

The issue is "fast fashion" and people buying tons of new clothes they dont need every year and I am one of those people. If there was an adjusted mindset to own a few quality items like it used to be then it wouldn't be hard to justify buying American made clothing which is obviously more expensive than stuff made in Cambodia and China.

Retail is taking a hit because it's cheaper and safer to shop online.

This is from a Feb 2025 article in Modern Retail magazine:

Outdoor retailers are closing stores and pursuing layoffs as they adjust to changing consumer trends around recreational activities.

In January, REI closed its Experiences business, which included adventure travel, day trips, classes and other events, due to high costs and unprofitability. The retailer laid off more than 400 employees because of this, after laying off more than 350 people a year before while citing declines in outdoor specialty retail and facing a net loss of $311 million in 2023.

Dick’s Sporting Goods also appears to be scaling back outdoor subsidiaries that had been a growth effort for the company; its subsidiary Public Lands recently reduced its store count from eight to three, and the company also shuttered three Moosejaw stores it acquired in 2023 from Walmart, Retail Dive reported. Meanwhile, Patagonia laid off 90 customer service workers in June and 41 people in October.

It's overpriced. I'd rather go to REI than cosplay as a fly fisherman
Wish we had an REI. That place is awesome.

It’s not all cheap Chinese

They have solid fishing supplies for fly fishing and they sell Barbour clothing which is fairly high end

Nope, but now that Filson is crap, it is the only decent alternative.

Some of the Orvis-branded stuff is really good, though.

Literally never heard of Orvis. So clearly, they were doing something right in the first place.

Great to wave the flag and say sell American manufactured goods.

Along with European or Canadian goods that are competing on equal grounds with US products, I've gone out out my way and deeper in pocket to only buy them ever since I was growing up in the 80s the son of a union paper mill worker.

However, unless the tariffs fundamentally change what Amazon, Walmart etc sells, they only squeeze smaller retailers and help these mega-conglomerates increase market shares.

The end result is not going to be Amazon/Walmart selling a lot higher percentage of American made goods.

Interesting because just today the CEO of Walmart, and they buy a ton of Chinese shite, said tariffs are working.

Me too! I thought I was "middle aged." Orvis has the best fitting pants I have found that fit appropriately over boots.

Shocking since the tariffs are working like a charm to squeeze smaller and independent retailers that can't outlast the spiking costs of almost everything business related and increase market share for the big dogs like Walmart and Amazon.
