Asking for cash is absolutely tacky.

How is it different asking for expensive gifts?

When I got married I had already been living in my house for 3 years. I didn't need any more small kitchen appliances or flatware.

We didn't ask for cash, but I don't have a problem with anyone who does.

I'm Asian and we don't buy toasters for people for their weddings. We always give cash. Its so much better for the couple.

Gifts are for the showers.

Yep. Probably the most fun weddings I've ever attended or been a part of, too.

I didnt go, couldnt schedule time, but was invited to one in India. Family paid for everyone from US to travel. I am guessing entire thing was easy over a million

I've both been in as a groomsman and attended several here in the States. Just the fact that the full ceremony is three days starts adding up expenses with a quickness.

I actually completely understand the cash/gold custom and think it's a pretty good idea, but we still have the cultural norm that it's tacky, so I wouldn't do it. The idea is to start building family wealth (hence why gold is also given) for the couple and their future kids. Instead, we get a ton of crap that we don't need and will be worthless in two years.

I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but we aren't putting "cash" on the registry. We're going through a website called Honeyfund.

there's nothing tackier than bringing a goddamn toaster to a wedding reception.

I don't live in lake Charles anymore...
Haha.

All the people calling it trashy probably don't mind when someone wears jeans to a wedding lol.

Second time I've had to ask someone this question: what year do you think it is?

Registries are online now and almost all people just order something and have it shipped directly to the bride/groom. No one physically brings gifts anymore.

I've been convinced honeyfund and cash are trashy

Which I kind of agree with, but not passionately enough to criticize other people for it

Too bad you're not Vietnamese...?

Buddy of mine, whose Vietnamese, gave us a $300 check as a gift.. Evidently it's a Vietnamese tradition..

I went to a wedding last year where the the groom and groomsmen were all in jeans and vests. Cash bar. Very classy.

it's 2017, and yes, people still bring shite to weddings.

i'm azn and had a few white people bring 'house gifts' to the reception and left it at the money table.

i mean, i'm grateful for the $20 toaster while i'm paying $60 a head for food

but again, it's all about custom and tradition.

I've been to 2 Asian weddings. For the first one, I had to ask about the registry because I didn't see registry info with the invitation and thats when I found out about being tradition to give the couple cash. But damn, Asians go all out on throwing a nice wedding. 7 course meals with lobster and prime rib, bar with anything you could think of plus a bottle of high end liquor on every table

If you own a home together and presumably live together, people already think you're trashy. Why not add tacky to the list of adjectives?

I can't believe she agreed. Asking for cash is the #1 faux pas, and every bride is made acutely aware of this during wedding planning.

THIS x 1000

To the OP: The whole idea behind wedding gifts is to help the couple get items they need for their home. If you don't need anything; how about not asking for anything?
Asking your guests to fund your honeymoon is beyond tacky. You want to go on a honeymoon? Pay for it yourself.
You mentioned home improvements. Why don't you do something appropriate like registering at Lowe's or Home Depot???

I love Asian weddings. If I ever get married, I'll keep that tradition for sure.
