I've been married almost 13 years now. I can't remember what people got us for a wedding gift, outside of my immediate family. You end up with 31 salad plates from cheap folks who feel obligated to get something, 5 extra sets of silverware, 3 blenders although none were on any registry, random things they saw that were close to what you registered for, an odd number of towels that were part of a set, and cash.
The whole industry around weddings is a crock. First you have to take the time to register at a couple of places. There is a well known place in our hometown, so we did that, and also at one of the large places like Macy's for out of town guests. Then after it is all over with, after your honeymoon, you have to take all the duplicate items back for a trade in. Again, taking more time.
It would be much simpler if we just went to cash as gifts in this country for big events. We already do it at high school and college graduation. Like someone else said, gifts for showers, cash for wedding.

Tigerfan- who cares what people think is tacky? If they don't want to come bc of this minor detail, frick them.
Giving someone a gift they will actually use is better than having to register for crap you don't even need

We had a destination wedding and put our excursions on the registry instead of household items since we got married at an older age and the house was already furnished.
At first i was like man i dont know, this is kind of tacky. Then i decided i didnt care.

It's probably tacky to some people bc they feel awkward giving the $20 they would have spent on some forks. It kind of magnifies the amount of their gift?
I have no clue bc of my culture. I always give a certain amount per person. I.e. If I have a date, I give more.

That's kind of my attitude. We aren't begging for cash, more so explaining our situation and that if you feel obligated to give us a gift (as most do), we would prefer cash or gift cards to needless items which we already have.
The charity option is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. We might have the link to a charity if they feel uncomfortable giving money as a gift and want to do something.

That's why you have a money dance at your wedding reception for Jack.

Why not register at Williams Sonoma or Crate and Barrel and upgrade from the stuff you already have.

I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but we aren't putting "cash" on the registry. We're going through a website called Honeyfund.
it's the same.
If people want to give you cash/money, they will. Dont ask for it...
dont register for shite and maybe people will get the hint, but again dont ask for it.

This thread is a good example of the mindset of our society. Instead of wanting to ask for or give something that is useful to somebody, more people are willing to give or ask for stuff that is of absolutely no use and will be wasted because they are more worried about looking "tacky" or trashy.
