Asking for cash is tacky. Wedding registries are by their nature tacky but necessary because it's expected that people will bring gifts and you'd rather them not all buy you crockpots.
In general, it would be better if you just told people not to bring gifts but that might be kind of weird. Just have a registry with relatively inexpensive stuff. If you put iPads and shite, you're no better than a hobo.

It is trashy. I've seen registries where you can give cash specifically for honeymoon (room, dinner, etc). That's still tacky imo but not as bad as straight begging like Essen Ln. (or is it Siegen?)

Cash? Tacky as hell.
A lot of people here will also say that adding honeymoon excursions and stuff to your list is tacky too, but I don't see a huge problem with it. Some people value experiences over things, so if you'd rather someone pay for the two of you to go scuba diving or something rather than get you a crock pot, I don't see the problem with it.
Edit: On our registry, we actually have an option for people to donate to the ASPCA in lieu of giving a gift. We frankly don't need a lot of stuff, so we gave people an option to donate to a charity that is meaningful to us.

I talked my fiancé into doing this, but she was reluctant. She thinks people will see it as tacky. We already own a home and have furnished it. If people are going to give us gifts, I would rather it be cash than a bunch of items we don't really need - even if people think it's weird.
We are explaining our situation and saying the money will go to home improvement projects and the honeymoon (which it will), but curious to what people in general think about this?
It is de rigueur at all the Indian weddings to which I've been.
Straight cash or gold, homie. Bride and groom end up taking home like $50,000+.

Yep. Probably the most fun weddings I've ever attended or been a part of, too.

Keep telling yourself that..
Hell if they would rather not invite me I would be fine with that, traveling for weddings is not something I enjoy.

I didnt go, couldnt schedule time, but was invited to one in India. Family paid for everyone from US to travel. I am guessing entire thing was easy over a million

That's the tackiest thing I've ever heard of. Why don't you just have a money dance too?? Posted on 4/5/17 at 1:31 pm to LNCHBOX

Asking for cash is absolutely tacky.
It really depends on the region.
If you go to a wedding in the Northeast, people almost exclusively give cash as gifts rather than merchandise.

But its not on the registry.

The tackiest wedding thing I've seen is a money dance at a wedding that had a cash bar. It was also super awkward because very few people went up to do the money dance with them because they used all their cash at the bar.
