One of the most depressing and mood killing songs ever pressed into vinyl and it seemed the radio stations were playing it nonstop.

Bobby Gentry was fine.
Yes she was.
She had a great personality and sense of humor too.
Incredibly talented.

Billy Joe was at the saw mill, by eyewitness report, the day before he jumped off of the bridge. If he wanted to die, he could have killed himself at the sawmill.
Just because he jumped into the water off of the bridge doesn't mean he died. He may be alive.

I think I have posted this before, and it's not an original thought; can't remember where I read or heard it.
If Bobby Gentry's two most well known songs (Ode to Billy Joe and Fancy) had been short stories or novels instead of songs, she would be included in the pantheon of the greatest southern gothic writers to ever put pen to paper.

—what kind of mood were you hoping for, listening to that song? You gotta admit, it’s effective

In the movie, he jumps because he drunkenly had sex with Rosco P. Coltrane.

Billy Joe killed himself by jumping off of that bridge which was maybe 10 feet above the water. The jump didn't kill him. If Billy Joe drowned then he was the only white boy in the Delta who couldn't swim. This leaves us with only one logical conclusion.
That boy ain't White.
That boy ain't White.
