The Hellcat was a favorite of US Navy air aces – men who had shot down five or more enemy aircraft. Lt. Alex Vraciu defeated 19 enemy planes in a Hellcat, six of them during one eight-minute dogfight. Lt. Bill Hardy earned his ace status in a single sortie in a Hellcat, when he destroyed five Japanese planes in 70 minutes on the 6th of April 1945.

To go back and put a gopro in those cockpits.

It fascinates me how fast planes were developed then. I think there was a f22 video game in 1991 and the plane didn't fly until 2001.

Grumman was a GREAT company. They were known for building legendary naval aircraft.

It’s a shame they fell into mismanagemen

It wasn’t mismanagement as much as two things: the end of the Cold War, and Dick Cheney. No one quite knows why, but Cheney had a hardon for Grumman. Said they only existed because of government welfare. Cheney personally ordered the destruction of F-14’s when the navy retired them. It was supposedly so Iran couldn’t get them for parts, but I think that was just the public excuse.

The Helldiver was a Curtis product, the SB2C, aka the Son of a Bitch, Second Class.

They could get shot up to hell and back and still fly.

Former co-worker was one of those Pacific WWII pilots in a Hellcat. One helluva an engineer too.

don't remember the exact time frame but it was circa then, there was some sort of detente(Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty?) agreement to destroy so many a/c capable of nuclear delivery? it had to be done at a certain time and each side was notified so satellites could confirm

ETA: Tomcat wasn't wired for nuke delivery, just wondering if that may have been part of the agreement?

America today would be unrecognizable to the men in these pictures. God damn we used to have the most bad arse civilization to ever exist on this planet and we let politicians, corporations, and outside bad actors dismantle it with nearly no resistance.
