Imagine if you fell off and had to hold your breath until the wave crashed. I don’t think I would make it
Those guys practice free diving too usually so holding their breath for minutes at a time isn't unusual for them.

I recently saw a moose on a median bigger than that wave

The frick kind of wave is that?
Normally the sea floor getting closer pushes back against the wave making it smaller. In Nazare there's a 16,000 foot deep canyon right there just off the coast.

Is an 80’ wave normal over there? Seems like that would destroy the coast

I’ve seen 40-60ft waves at Waimea Bay before. One of the most amazing yet terrifying things I’ve ever seen. The ground shakes when the waves crash.
The largest wave I saw a guy ride was 60+ and he won the Eddie that year. Incredible. The guys riding these waves have a screw or two missing, not just loose.

If I had to quantify it, I would say his top speed was approximately pants shitting miles per hour. Whatever that is in metric units...

Surfer lived, all the spectators in the foreground died when that wave hit shore.

It took 10 months for the news to get out?

Coming from a surfer no fricking way I even attempt that. I have seen 50 ft waves when I was in the Navy and those scared the shite out of me. I have wiped out on a 10 ft wave and felt like death was near but the power of that wave if you wipe out would certainly kill a person.

I can’t even comprehend these waves. I need to see them in person some day.
This, would be terrifying to just watch the wave break, let alone see someone ride it.
