TexasTiger90 already corrected me

That was actually photographer Robert Landsberg.
They found his body covering the film, when developed showed the wall of ash heading his way.

that detail just always stuck with me... to try to protect your work when you know you're basically about to die is pretty badass IMO.

You have to zoom into the bottom left corner to see the college instructor who became entangled in in the lines of a giant kite when it caught an unexpected wind. He and his students were attempting to break a world record in 1983. He wound up falling 115 feet to his death.

Wow

It's more likely he just happened to fall on top of the film

This one seems like a PSA similar to the tsunami pic. If you're hair stands up, you are about to get hit by lightning.

This exact thing happened to us on the beach this past summer. A storm had passed and was off shore and the sun was back out. The kids ran down to the beach and I was walking behind them. Came over the dunes and all the kids were laughing about their hair standing up. I yelled as soon as I saw them. They saw the serious look in my face and ran. We got back to the beach house and that's when I googled this pic for them. They freaked.

as a PSA:, if the tide ever goes way, way out, don't stick around going "oh, this is really neat." Get the F out of dodge.

Reading about the Christmas Tsunami....animals started freaking out before hand ( before the water receded ) the animals knew things weren't right.

This haunting and eerie photograph was taken by David Seymour (one of the founders of Magnum Photos and one of the leading photojournalists of the 20th century) in a home for emotionally disturbed children located in Warsaw, 1948. The assignment at the center that day was to draw “home” on the blackboard. While other kids drew houses, Terezka, who grew up in a concentration camp, had a different idea of home. One can only wonder what the scribble depicts, but it seems as if the pain and the horrors endured on the camp is clearly seen in the piercing glare of Terezka.

Thankfully the man and child survived that IRA bombing. The photographer died though as I recall.

More than two dozen were killed in that bombing - the police had been monitoring the bombing suspects, knew where the bomb was, and inadvertently led people to where the bomb was.

The people in the photo survived, the photographer didn’t. Over 200 were injured.

There were telephone warnings and the police knew where the bomb was. Knowing all that makes this pic even more eerie.

Chernobyl's burning reactor.

Not great, not terrible.

Although for sheer giant brass balls, there's this fricking guy.

That's the "elephant's foot" on the right. It's still incredibly lethal 35 years later.

For those who don't know what that is, that is part of the melted core of the No. 4 reactor at the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Station located near Chernobyl, Ukraine.

There’s a famous photo found at a convenience store parking lot of a teenage girl and a young boy bound and gagged in the back of a van. The girl is believed to be Tara Calico who disappeared in 1988. The culprit was never found.

I think I saw this on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. As I kid, I was scared shitless of any white van I'd see going forward.
