So they weren't Syrians? I'm trying to figure out your disagreement.

Syrians are mostly Sunni. Iranians are Shia. Alawites, like Assad and his ruling oligarchy are a sect of Shias. Sunni Arabs and Sunni Kurds were fighting Shia Alawites who were later supported by Iranians and Lebanese Hezbollah, who are, you guessed it, Shia. Iranian back militia are not Syrians. They are from different nationalities, mostly Iranian, and are therefore Shias. Syrian Alawites serve in the Syrian army.
So no, they weren’t Syrians, they were foreign mercenaries.

Speaking of awful video to watch....

You can't make it out because of poor video quality back then but people had stampeded into getting themselves stuck in the doorway that is bellowing flames. Burning alive is one of my biggest fears behind being buried alive.

Thích Qu?ng Ð?c was a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who burned himself to death at a busy Saigon road intersection on 11 June 1963. Qu?ng Ð?c was protesting the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese Roman Catholic government led by Ngô Ðình Di?m.

Nguy?n Van Lém, often referred to as B?y L?p, was a member of the Viet Cong. He was summarily executed in Saigon during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War, when the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces launched a massive surprise attack. Lém was alleged to have murdered a general and seven members of the general's family before being captured.

One awful photo I won’t post is of the Napalm Girl. Absolutely horrible. The Vietnam war was terrible in so many ways. The people in that part of the world have suffered some of the worst.

Phan Thi Kim Phúc and her family were residents of the village of Tr?ng Bàng in South Vietnam. On June 8, 1972, South Vietnamese planes dropped a napalm bomb on Tr?ng Bàng, which had been attacked and occupied by North Vietnamese forces.[2] Kim Phúc joined a group of civilians and South Vietnamese soldiers who were fleeing from the Caodai Temple to the safety of South Vietnamese-held positions.[3] The Republic of Vietnam Air Force pilot mistook the group for enemy soldiers and diverted to attack. The bombing killed two of Kim Phúc's cousins and two other villagers. Kim Phúc received third degree burns after her clothing was burned by the fire.[4] Associated Press photographer Nick Ut's photograph of Kim Phúc running naked amid other fleeing villagers, South Vietnamese soldiers, and press photographers became one of the most haunting images of the Vietnam War.

Timothy Treadwell was a nutcase who used to make annual summer trips to Katmai National Park in Alaska to basically living among brown bears and "protect" them. He would frequently get way too close to bears, including physical contact. Well, one night in October 2003 the wrong bear made its way into his camp and killed both him and his girlfriend.

When the bear attacked a camera was on and recorded audio of the incident. I don't believe the audio was ever leaked, though, and any videos on the Internet are fake. There's also at least one picture of Treadwell's remains (featuring a bent leg with the entire thigh eaten off) that can be found - but I don't know if it's real.

I'm always kind of taken aback at how big fighter jets are when I see them up close or in a picture like this that shows the scale. It's truly amazing at the things they can do and be as big as they are.

there is probably some perspective involved with that photo. Some are decent sized, but that seems exceptionally large in comparison. Ive seen a lot, going to the Wright-Patt USAF museum. they have most, foreign and domestics in there

Yeah I'm sure there is something going on with the perspective in that photo, but I'm just going off my mental picture of the bigger fighters I've seen. F14 & F22 come to mind.

As for the picture, it was a SU-27 and they are definitely big arse jets. Here are the specs I can find of the SU-27SK variant:
quote:

Length: 21.9 m (71 ft 10 in)
Wingspan: 14.7 m (48 ft 3 in)
Height: 5.92 m (19 ft 5 in)
Wing area: 62 m2 (670 sq ft)
Empty weight: 16,380 kg (36,112 lb)
Gross weight: 23,430 kg (51,654 lb)
Max takeoff weight: 30,450 kg (67,131 lb)
Fuel capacity: 9,400 kg (20,723.5 lb) internal[118]

70ft long and nearly 50 ft wide is a big aircraft compared to small fighters like the F-16.

I don't believe that's real. Below is a link to a scene from The Grizzly Man (a documentary about Treadwell) regarding the audio.

Very much reminds me of the Jane Wicker crash from a couple of years ago

I just watched the footage on youtube and it definitely looks like something on the plane broke. They flipped the plane upside down not high above the ground and seemed ok for a second, when it suddenly lurched back around and crashed. It almost looked like you could see the pilot try to recover it, to no avail.

I was sleeping with the tv on CNN, and was woken up by the footage of this right after it happened. Frightening.

Aside from our opinions about murder / assassination / suicide, Japanese people and blades are quite a combination.

quote:

In 1960, Japanese socialist leader Inejiro Asanuma was assassinated by radical right-wing activist Otoya Yamaguchi with a samurai sword during a televised debate. Asanuma was a communist sympathizer and wanted to link Japan more closely with China politically.
