If you're sick and bring a doctor's excuse that should be enough. I don't want someone who is sick at a food service area.

the manager is calling their bluff. i can guarantee you 100% she knows who is actually sick and who is full of shite.

I could never work for someone who requires a doctor's note for for a sick day. Feels like elementary school

The same people saying a doctor's note should be required for illness are the ones who would say you're a pussy if you go to the doctor for COVID

never taken a day off in 30 years as if that's something to be proud of

Y’all have no clue how bad the workforce is now. Most likely the restaurant Corp in this case Darden restaurants is making this manager do a bunch of bs busywork and run the lowest labor in years with this even more bottom of the barrel staff. It doesn’t matter anyway nobody wants to eat inside casual dining right?

In the sense that not using your credit card points before they expire is something to be proud of, sure. It's a benefit that's owed to you. Why wouldn't you use it?

I worked a shitty retail job in college with a manager like that. She wouldn’t change my schedule going from summer to fall session and wanted me to schedule classes around work. So I quit and found another shitty retail job the next day that accommodated my school schedule. Why do people expect loyalty for shitty jobs?

This is every day for going on three years in the industry. I’m surprised she didn’t call them all cocksuckers in the message

Not surprised they have a problem retaining employee. They seem to attract a lot of historically poor tippers as customers.

came into the professional world with that mindset, don't really see the point in it anymore, there is no individual that is that vital or unreplaceable to the organization

Honestly...as someone who has to manage people (behavioral therapists who work under me are generally college/grad school kids) I fricking get it. The call outs get obnoxious and sometimes I want to say if you're really ill this damn much maybe you need to be on disability
A company I worked for decided to open a retail store. I was given the task of making it happen, with the goal of franchising it.
It was the worst period of my professional life. I cobbled way thru it and got the store going, but good god. Retail workers suck. They don't show up, or they leave. They quit without telling you. They steal shite and deny it when there is literally no other option. They surf porn on company property. They ignore basic tasks.
When I would find someone somewhat reliable, I got them on salary as quickly as possible (ironically, they could have made MORE as hourly, but they viewed salary as being better) and just looked past the little warts like surfing for porn if they showed up and didn't steal.
In a 3 month span, I think I hired and fired and hired 15 people for a little store that only ever had 1-2 people on hand at a time.

Can we discuss the obvious lie that the manager totaled her car on her way to work and still made it in on time?
This bitch baking in an extra couple of hours to her commute each day when deciding when to leave for work?

I wouldn't work anywhere that makes you prove you were sick, or even require a doctor's note. frick all that noise. If you have someone that calls in excessively, get rid of them.

this, sick usage would go down drastically if the unused time was paid out to the employee upon retirement

i've probably "given" dozens of unused sick days to my employers... all for nothing

Hence why that should never be considered as a career to anyone. It's a shite job at all levels and always will be. All service industry is like that.
And correct, I rarely ever want to go eat inside of a restaurant.

I'm picturing her proofing her message one last time, grabbing her coffee mug, sitting back, nodding to herself for putting these kids who "don't know what it's like" in their place, and clicking send - feeling totally satisfied with a job well done. Then came the call from HR.

adapt to the system rather than trying to force the system to what you want. Anticipate call ins because it's going to happen in that shitty line of work, and schedule more than needed. On the days everyone actually shows, send someone home early.
What a dumbass proposal. The email was better. The people don't want to work anyway, so your obvious answer is to schedule them more and cut them if they all show up? In the email the lady said they were complaining about being cut already.
