this is my takeaway from this thread
To be fair to me, I'm just reminiscing about what fraternities were like at Ole Miss when I was there 10-11 years ago in a single thread about a related topic on an internet message board.
I haven't thought about or discussed them at this length since college I don't think. I certainly don't "engross" myself with it, nor did I in college.

“A patrol officer noticed a pickup truck that matched the description of Theesfeld's parked at the gas station and Memphis police soon swarmed the area, taking the 22-year-old into custody.
When he was arrested, Theesfeld's clothes appeared to have blood on them and a weapon was discovered inside the vehicle, law enforcement officials told FOX13.”

Isn’t their fault tho, State of Mississippi requires both schools to take stupid low ACT scores so so many people fail out after a year.
It’s a dumb law and a lot of people want it changed.
Yep. State and Ole Miss have both petitioned for their admission standards to be in line with LSU, Alabama and Tennessee, but there's too many people in charge that want it to be in line with JSU, Alcorn, Valley and Southern U.
The gist of the case was that a student went to Jackson State and skirted by. Multiple employers told him that they wouldn't hire him because of JSU's reputation (JSU stands for Just Show Up). So he and his dad sued the state because they felt that he did not get the same education as his peers that went to MSU, Ole Miss and USM. Instead of it being an indictment on the piss poor quality of JSU, the settlement called for all public colleges in MS to have the same admission standards. The HBCUs also had to increase their non-black enrollment to a certain level.
The admission standards dropped for MSU and Ole Miss, but the HBCUs still haven't hit their non-black enrollment numbers. Jackson State even opened a campus in lily white Madison to try to help with it.

It’s quite a bit more advanced than that.

This story hits too close to home for me - I have two girls (one an OM grad - same sorrority as the girl Rileigh that is peripherally involved and one at LSU) and two teenage boys. I hope that the talks we've had with all of them about how to treat people and basic tenets of how to avoid compromising positions will protect them from things like this. It makes me heartsick for both families - the victim and the alleged perpetrator. It is hard to understand how a person can do that kind of violence to another human being, regardless of the circumstances.

my stepson is starting his sophomore year there, he's in a big time fraternity there and I wonder sometimes how they ever get any class work done!!!!

Poor parenting puts out bad products. Prime example is this TPOS.

Family was informed this weekend that it was a homicide and that Laffyette County was the location, so if you consider that close to fact, looks like she wasn’t killed AT the lake
Actually the place where they found her at the lake is in Lafayette County. It's just on the north side of Sardis Lake where the county line extends.
Sorry for the reply on a really old comment but I had to go back and catch up on things I've missed since yesterday.

Does JSU have a law or nursing school? That’s where Southern U’s white enrollment is.
Edit - And in hindsight this explains why Alcorn has a hand in the CC system in MS. White kids will go to a CC affiliated with them before going to a real school like MSU, OM, USM.

I’m in the same position. My daughter will soon enroll at LSU, and she is completely shaken by this murder. We’ve had discussions about avoiding potentially dangerous/compromising positions before all this happened, but she is just now starting to comprehend why her dad and I keep talking to her about such things. Rapists and murderers don’t always come from trashy backgrounds and “look” the part (methy).
That said, I am certainly not blaming the victim for not realizing that this guy could murder her. By all accounts, no one saw this coming. Nevertheless, I believe it is prudent to continue having these types of discussions with our college-aged kids.
