We have this one guy named Dick (Richard) who is 80 years old and refuses to retire. He's an SAP programmer who is an absolute fricking wizard. Makes everyone else looks like illiterate fricks. Boggles my mind every time I see him. He's too old to know as much computer shite as he does. It's just weird.

My boss is that way. He is seriously against most technology. The dude would rather cut his arm off than use a debit card.

"Can you shrink this Excel page down to where I can print it on one sheet?"
"I could, but Excel won't let me shrink text down to a negative number."
"There has to be a way."
"I'm sure that you could shrink War and Peace down to one page of type, but that doesn't mean anyone would be able to read it."

Oh my gosh yes. Yes yes yes.
Isn't so much coworkers currently, but definitely some clients. And in my old job, it was the coworker in the office directly next to me who had replaced me when I was promoted, so I was the one expected to help her when I had my own shite to do. My 73 year old boss didn't understand that I wasn't neglecting to "train" her.. I just wasn't going to waste my time teaching her how to use Outlook.

Yeah my parents are pretty similar to that woman in your story, and they always tell me to put computer literate on my resumè, and I'm like knowing how to use PP, Excel and other basics don't count for shite to my generation. If I knew how to code I'd probably include that, but right now I just have a list of shite I am familiar with just to add some more bullshite to talk about in an interview.

It is the manager's responsibility to determine the worth of an employee. It has been my experience that young computer savvy people often lack patience not only with older employees, but also with customers. An older, more experienced employee, in certain jobs, often can reassure a customer better, and almost always is more patient. It just depends on the job and the skills or knowledge required.

If you're doing her shite, they don't need her. Get her put out and get them to realize you can take on her work. Ask for 80% of what they were paying her yearly as compensation to be added to your salary. You'll be saving them time, money in performance, salary, benefits, and hiring/re-training. All in all it's a win for them and you get a cake raise.

In my limited experience, there seems to be a decent amount of companies out there run by senile old farts who have no idea how much of the company is basically run by their employees. These types wouldn't even know how to look for someone with computer skills because they themselves can't do it.
The president of the company I worked for straight out of college used to call me from his iPhone for directions to places when he was out.
-_-

Yeah, my boss is almost 60 and knows 10x more about computers than I do. He programmed all our project management and database software.
Everyone else here... morons who can't burn a CD or download from dropbox.

I forgot to mention and just edited it in, but Dick is 80.

My boss has over 10k unopened emails in her school email inbox.
10,000+.
And she can't figure out why her email never loads properly on her school-provided i-Phone. She's only a little over 50 yrs old, too.

How old we talking? Most of the older ones in my office can do at least the simple tasks they just need guidance on more complicated programs like Salesforce or Excel.
It's one thing for a 70+ year old, but what floors me is when someone in their 50s can't operate a computer...and manage to run a business. I mean, they were fairly young during the rise of household computers and the Internet

Our Nashville store called me one day to tell me they had an email I needed to read. I said fine, no problem, just forward it to me. The response was awesome "I don't know how to do that but I will try"
30 min later I got a 4 page fax of the email.
Or sometimes I will call and tell them to check their email and the responses are grand. Well, I am out running errands and the computer I get emails on is at the office.
