My dog is getting up there in years, you can see when he walks. He drags his back legs, has trouble standing, etc. Bought him a wheelchair type thing off Amazon because he isn't in pain (no whimpering, crying, or anything) but he is struggling. He has also gone from a dog that would eat anything to a picky eater. Like one day he will eat dog food and the next he won't eat it.

Older dogs start to lose their senses (hearing/vision), and react kind of odd to it.

My chocolate lab lived outside in a kennel the first 10 years or so, when she got too old to hunt I moved her inside with us.

What time of day is he doing the barking?

We’ve had two dogs develop sundowners. Getting confused and agitated after dark. Hemp chews worked very well for both; you can order them off Amazon.

We moved when my dog was about 13. Her behavior completely changed after that and she started going downhill.

My old dog would go out in the morning and I usually wouldn't see him again until dark. Once he hit about 10 he would go outside, take a dump at the neighbor's, and come back inside to sleep all day. Your dog is pretty much a senior citizen. He probably just wants to squash nuts in the AC all day.

It’s too hot. Some older dogs just don’t tolerate heat very well. Take him out on a leash during the day. As soon as he does his business bring him back in. You might spray him down with the hose or provide a “mister” with a fan somewhere in a shady spot. Try one of those cheap Dollar
Store baby pools. Otherwise, if he’s not afraid of thunder or lightning, pray for a daytime rainstorm. If he doesn’t mind going out in that, I would think that would give you a clue that he’s just too hot.

Almost all of our dogs care little to none about going out in the heat.
The older ones especially

Our Aussie went deaf and that, plus a few other instances turned a fearless girl into a fearful creature. The vet thought she might have had a stroke, because the deafness happened quickly. She did learn to compensate for it and we could pretty easily communicate with her using signals. Does his bark sound the same? Her's became hoarse sounding.

Similar but different:
We had a nearly feral cat who was totally outdoors. When she was 14 one January night she decided she wanted to come in, and did and left the next morning. Same thing happened the next two nights, and then she reverted bak to outdoor life. Those were the three coldest nights that year. She came in just at dusk, before the temperatures dropped.

I don't think there are any palm trees within 200 miles of us in east Tennessee. We can't grow sagos outdoors, but in pots brought in in late fall.

I had a dog that lived here for years and suddenly started to be hesitant to go in the backyard.. but it was a specific time of day.. around 6 in evening.. she would go out.. put her nose in air and then pretty much want to come back in.. her sister would go out with her and did not care.. I figured something was blowing in at that time and a scent being brought down from north of me that caused her to fear a predator or dangerous situation.. then it just stopped .. and no problem going outside..

Older dogs start to feel vulnerable to other creatures as their hearing and sight declines..they really do not feel safe alone and dont feel they can defend themselves...they prefer to be with others, or in a safe place once all that starts. Your dog is right at that age.

I work 60 hours a week so I haven’t been able to watch him much over the past week, but what I am noticing, he is coming inside and directly going to the front windows to look outside. I’m convinced he saw something/was approached by something and he feels like he needs to be inside to protect us.

My little guy is 16+ years old... He started hating the heat around IDA.. I felt bad because he was panting and eyes got real big... He is part Chihuahua and Rat Terrier...
