Should this middle age guy walk at graduation with the young kids?
No. Maybe the better message to the younger generation should be to not get wrapped up in unnecessary theatrics to appease a sense of vanity.
If you have a job, go to work. If you don't, take the kids fishing.
I didn't walk. I don't even display my degrees. My kids know what I accomplished. Let your modesty be your legacy.

Walk as a lesson to your kid. I dedicated my dissertation to my 4 children so they could see what it takes to set a goal and achieve it. I walked and got a PHD at 41. My sons took lessons from that....

I graduated CM with a couple of guys in their late 30s and early 40s. They walked. We had a great time.

I graduated in December with my MBA and I walked. Let me rephrase, I strutted like a peacock and I’m 44.

Didn't walk for my bachelor's. Didn't walk for my master's. Won't walk for my specialist.
I regret nothing.

Graduated at 31. Didn't once consider walking.

On the other hand, it would be cool for my 17 year old to see me graduate.
RTR!

I wasn't going to, but I was already married by then and my wife and mother both really wanted it.
I did it mostly for them, and I don't regret it. It's one morning out of your life and if it will mean something to your son, you should do it.

I graduated in Fall '85. There was no walking. I am pretty sure there was no name reading, either.....at least for the bachelors' degrees. Candidates were asked to stand, and we were "graduated" right there on the floor.
I remember some jackass set off a bunch of firecrackers during the ceremony, but I can't remember if that was why there was no walking.

I did not walk but I did have them send me my honor cord with the diploma. The wife and I were on vacation in the Caribbean anyway.

I walked for undergrad, 21. Of all the people I invited only my parents and one friend came.
11 years later, finished grad. in August and LSU cancelled August graduation, did not go back for December, already working in my field and son born preemie the same week.

Skipped on walking to run my final conference track meet.
No regrets.

My Dad's 1st cardio version in AR was the same day as my 2nd degree graduation in LA. Needless to say elderly Dad took precedence. And I was have told on here before, that was the beginning of a 6 month ordeal.

I walked. It's cool. How many other times do you get that opportunity?
