Older black women who treat you like one of their children

Is this common outside of the south?
I was out riding today and managed a sunburn from the knee down.
At three separate gas stations an older black lady told me I should really get some sunblock on that.
I'm curious if this sort of behavior exists outside of the South?
These women always seem to set aside whatever the issues and differences of the day are and act in a maternal fashion.

Sunblock won't do shite for a sunburn.

If you go to a black family's house (for the most party, not every black family), they will treat you like family. I go visit an older black guy from time to time and when I go over, his wife makes sure I get something to eat, etc, etc.
I am not sure if it is a southern thing or not, more than likely, but I know what you mean.

Man I have 4 older lady black neighbors and every single day at least one of them are tying to baby me in one way or another. It's pretty awesome how maternal they are. I probably get 5 random hugs a week from them just because we happen to be walking outside on the block at the same time.
I can sometimes smell food and it never fails someone is looking out their window for me to come home and running outside to offer me some soul food.
