ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) — New jobs and quicker deliveries are on the way in Acadiana, with the announcement of a new Amazon last-mile distribution facility to be built on Abbeville.
The Amazon facility is expected to begin operations in 2024, offering opportunities for full and part time employment, according to the Vermilion Economic Development Alliance. The facility will be located at 3221 Veterans Memorial Blvd., where a Fruit of The Loom used to be.
This won't be the massive DC's like they have going up in Cortana (Baton Rouge), Shreveport, or Carencro....but it will be a busy last mile center like what's in Jefferson Parish, Siegen Lane, or Port Allen. Packages will be sorted and placed onto delivery trucks routed to homes and businesses in Acadiana.
I know Amazon isn't the best place to work, but it's nice to see an old fruit of the loom factory be repurposed into something that contributes to the regional economy. Instead of making underwear, they will be shipping underwear.

There used to be a SIPS panel manufacturer in the building. I went to it a few times to tour it while bidding on building some tax credit houses to see if SIPS were cheaper than stick build. It was a neat factory but SIPS never really took off here. I know they are popular in colder climates up North.

I'm reminded of an old Ralph Begnaud joke about the conson' factory. His buddy was a Diesel Fitter on the production line. He'd hold up the underwear at the end of the line and proclaim "Diesel fitter!"

The image of an underwear factory, in disrepair (full of holes) amuses me.
I'm sure Amazon won't let this facility go to waist.

Never knew there was an old Fruit of the Loom factory in Abbeville, I only remember the huge one in St. Martinville many years ago.

Semi-related, there was also a sewing plant in Kaplan called Garan. Not sure what they sewed in that plant, but Garan is known for the famous Garanimals underwear.

This is a DS (Last mile) like DNO2 in New Orleans and DLB2 in Baton Rouge. Cortanna is a First Mile DC, and Carencro is a middle mile sort center.
This article is terrible.

NAFTA killed all those FOL plants and jobs in the mid/late 1990's. Locations were in Port Barre, Abbeville, St. Martinville, and Jeanerette. Each were known as " city Mills" i.e. Martin Mills. FOL HQ in Chicago claimed production costs were to high so they sent the jobs overseas to Mexico and eventually China. Sadly, several of the warehouse buildings have been vacant for 25+ years or partially leased.
FOL shutting down St. Martinville (approx. 4,000 jobs) started the low-income poverty, crime, drugs, and corruption the town has today. FOL once contributed $$$ millions in taxes that were ear-marked for law enforcement, education-school board, road improvements, and the city parish gov't. FOL filed for bankruptcy in 1999 and never paid the millions owed after they shut down.
Martin Mills as it sits today

hopefully none of the delivery trucks lock up the brakes, and leave skid marks

Amazon will frick it up. Doesn't matter how many warehouses they build or where they put them, delivery times get worse. Maybe if they build one between me and the warehouse that is close to me they can start hitting the old Prime delivery window again. I doubt it, though.
I have still yet to find anything same or next-day delivery. I still have 90% or more of my orders delivered outside of the Prime window I pay for. Call a new warehouse whatever slick name you want to call it, it won't matter.

I used to deliver chips and sodas to the vending machines at those locations. You had to be out of there before 9 o clock break or you would get trampled over… serious shite right there.

Sounds like NAFTA proved to be a major shitstain on FOL.
