the 90s restaurants still allowed smoking. i worked at a fast food place in high school and everyone smoked freely inside. I remember riding in the car with my grandma in the 80s while she smoked with the windows up and it wasn't a big deal.
Yeah, in the 90s smoking was allowed in restaurants. Sometimes I still catch myself saying "non smoking please" to the host.

Some schools had smoking poles or smoking trees, where students who smoked would gather.

Smoking was just about everywhere. I remember in the '70s in just about every establishment I walked into had someone people smoking except one that I can recall and that was Abdalla's department store.
Always had an ashtray on a table at a restaurant filled with cigarette butts and ashes, walk near an entrance and a wall of smoke is there to greet you.
ETA: Forgot about this but my grandpa had an ashtray pedestal like this one

My Dad died in 2012 from throat cancer, he had the opening in his throat to talk through. I kept the fancy cigarette holder he had on his desk for years as a keepsake. So yes their was consequences from all the smoking.

America was better when you could smoke cowboy killers on an airplane.

I have multiple memories of this: a card game that my dad hosted at our house with a stratified layer of cigarette smoke in the living room where it was being played, a flight to Europe in 1990 where the back of the plane was a cloud of cigarette smoke, coming back from a bar and smelling like cigarette smoke even though I didn't smoke.
It was everywhere, all the time. I maintain the belief that the reason for laws banning smoking in public places had nothing to do with the risk of cancer from second-hand smoke (other than the convenient excuse that it provided) and everything to do with the utter and complete lack of manners and consideration exhibited by those who smoked.

It's honestly hard for me to comprehend that smoking was ever ok on an airplane. It just seems inconsiderate as frick to do it. That doesn't even get into the health concerns on it.
Another one looking for their safe zone.

Smoking ban went into effect in LA in 2007, most here should remember smoking in restaurants.

I remember going to breakfast at a Waffle House one morning.
I was the only one in the place not smoking. Even the kids were smoking.

Camels with no filters were the bomb

I used to get paid to grab beer and cigs from the corner store when I was maybe 8.
That was mid 60's. The only person I remember that didn't smoke was my Mom.

It was your constitutional right to smoke at work.

I was born in the mid-80's and remember cigarette vending machines in restaurants. Just something hard to even comprehend now.

There was actually a time when smoking was seen as a symbol of refinement and sophistication.
