I’m having a garage sale and I have 6 boxed and wrapped cowboy hats. They are Stetson and Miller Bros brand. They were my father in laws and he recently passed. What is a good price?

....now that I have that out of the way, I honestly have no idea.

Since it's a garage sale, I wouldn't encourage a high price.

Really would depend on how used they are. I don't have an issue with use clothes, but used hats are different thing. You don't exactly clean them like you would standard clothing.

I would honestly value those properly before tossing them on a folding table. You never know.

They have professional hat cleaning and restoration services for nice cowboy hats. The used market is actually pretty strong. They’ll replace the band and liner and refurbish the leather.

IMO I don’t know if I could get rid of something like that. To each their own.

Your kids wouldn’t want one or two as a sentimental thing? Maybe not now, but when they’re older it might mean something.

A used Stetson can range from $50 to $1000+, just depends on the model.

I bought two old wool cowboy hats yesterday. I don’t even know who made one of them. The other was made in Denver, and may bring decent money.

Thanks for the info. These are all from the 80s, and have been on a shelf in the garage for years. There is more than likely a spider habitat going on in some of these boxes.

Straw hats are for summertime when it's too hot to wear wool or felt. Probably best just to turn straw hats over to kids to play cowboys and Indians with. Wool hats are basic, no frills or extras, regular cowboy hats. Stetson, Justin, and a few other companies make some decent wool hats, but even new they aren't priced at more than about $125.00 tops. Really good quality cowboy hats begin at about 200X beaver felt and continue up to 1000x beaver. There are hats available that are only 6X beaver as well. The "x" number used to describe the make up of the hat varies by manufacturer and is rather arbitrary. Just know that any hat that has 500X or more should bring a better price due to its quality and resistance to damage from wear and water.

A good quality wool hat might bring you about $25 or $30 used. A high count beaver hat could bring a couple hundred if it's in good shape. Hats made in, or prior to, the 1960s can generally bring a better price due to their value as vintage.

(Dear lawd, I'm tellin' the truth about this, but it sounds like a National Lampoon joke.)
