The other side of this is I have a couple of old medical bills outstanding that I'm disputing. I was told not to pay them off by a mortgage broker because paying them off would lower my score.

i understand. But why would we absolve people from failing to pay medical bills if we are going to hold them accountable for other essentials

Here come the people who "pay cash for everything" so they don't have a credit score and/or credit scores are stupid.

I have a friend like that. He has almost no credit because he strokes a check for everything.

He and his wife each have one credit card each for car, hotel, airlines reservations etc.

He laughs at people who have everything strung out on credit. "All that money they paid in interest. I spent on vacation."

It's wonderful if you can do it.

the biggest issue about medical bills is how the same service can cost 4-5 different amounts

and, if you end up with a bill, your amount will be the absolute max and 10x (or more) or so larger than the others

Saving your life in an emergency situation is a bit different than fixing your roof.

Medical collections should be REMOVED as a factor in credit scores.

I don't believe bills for hospital stays (non elective) should be included against you. But that's because I think it's a crooked system that literally you can't compare to any other industry except maybe higher education.

No one has any idea what the price will end up being when they enter a hospital and usually receive bills from 10 different entities afterward that they never even knew were there. You have zero ability to compare prices or even know the price. Now if you are accumulating bills for elective surgeries, then usually you know the deal going in so I'm all for that affecting your credit score.

Is there a way to find out what insurance companies pay? If that is what they pay, that is what it costs. Multiplying that number by 10 for an individual should be illegal.

But I just can’t imagine caring enough to regularly check on it

A few years ago, my former company had a retard in the corporate payroll department fall for a phishing scam email and send said scammer the W-2s of everyone in the company.

My wife never checked hers until we went to move apartments a couple years ago. They ran out credit and said because of her score, we'd have to get a cosigner or pay an extra 2 months of rent as a deposit. She had been in a rollover accident a couple years prior with a friend driving which was the fault of the other driver.

Something like $150 of her medical bills went unpaid and a combo of the at fault lady not paying and the collection agency trying to contact my wife at an address she hadn't been in 4 years meant it just sat there delinquent.

We paid that and haven't seen any issues of anyone using my SSN for anything, but yeah, I monitor that shite.

not a lot.

What about food bills? Should debts accumulated at Whole Foods be ignored as well?

Eh, I get what you're saying, but while food and a roof are essentials, they don't compare to something like a life saving procedure.
