Oh snap, FICO is about to get more racist/classist

NPR
that's like...the point of a credit score?
quote:
The changes will be extensive. About 40 million Americans are likely to see their credit scores drop by 20 points or more, and an equal number should go up by as much, according to Joanne Gaskin, vice president of scores and analytics at FICO, the company at the heart of the credit scoring system.
Every five years or so, FICO updates the way it determines credit scores. This time, the biggest change is in how it treats personal loans, Gaskin says.
quote:
Let's let's say you pay off all your credit cards with a personal loan. Under the old system, your credit score might go up. But under the new approach, FICO will look back over a period of time — as far as two years — to see whether you've used the loan to reduce your high-interest credit card debt or whether you're using plastic as much as before, running up new revolving balances and falling deeper into debt.
"What we find is that potentially that consumer's credit file carries more risk than what was apparent," Gaskin says.
quote:
If your finances are in good shape and you already have a good credit score, you're likely to see your score improve, she says. But Gaskin says those whose scores will decline are typically people in the lower FICO score range, about 580 and below. (FICO scores range from 300 to 850.)
That's not good news for people who are struggling financially, says Marisabel Torres with the Center for Responsible Lending. "It sounds like we're penalizing people for getting into a bad situation."

This is gonna hurt the booming high interest loan industry (One Main, republic finance etc)

Here come the people who "pay cash for everything" so they don't have a credit score and/or credit scores are stupid.

How dare they penalize people who pay off their credit card debt with debt elsewhere.

Ironic that someone from the “Center for Responsible Lending” seems opposed to the very principle of a credit score which in theory is supposed to help banks lend their money responsibly.

Cough cough Dave Ramsey. But to be fair he's speaking to people with no self-control. Those who do have self-control pay their bill off every month and enjoy rewards points paid for by those with no self-control. It's a beautiful system IMO. Keep paying the minimum payment, Americans. That’s exactly what they’re doing. Stupid decisions have consequences.

I truly don’t understand why credit scores are something people wonder about. I get that you may want to know it when purchasing a house or such. But I just can’t imagine caring enough to regularly check on it

Guess my FICO is gonna be 870 now.

There is a difference between obsessing over it and saying the whole thing is stupid because you have a low or no score.

Agreed.
Are people out there applying for credit multiple times a year?

If you find an issue it usually takes some time to fix. So why wait for when the score is important to initiate the fix vs getting it fixed before it hurts you.

Based on the title I expected to read that white people credit scores were being automatically dropped

Medical collections should be REMOVED as a factor in credit scores.
Then possibly also municipal fines.

All valid points but no one can deny that the whole thing is a racket. I closed some old zero balance cards that I had used several years ago when starting a new business. The cards were sitting in my safe and I got them all out and closed the accounts. A week later I get a notice that my score took a hit. I inquired and was told I “wasn’t utilizing my available credit” and that damaged my score. What the frick is that?

Roofers don’t have to fix your roof and can approve/deny your credit.
Emergency rooms have to treat you and will send you a bill you could never pay.
Taking out the credit hit for this would mean there’s literally zero reason to ever pay an ER bill.

Which is why all high schools in America should have mandatory financial courses that cover topics such as interest and debt.
