Asheville is far enough inland I’ll bet a lot of people didn’t take enough precautions
I lived there for 20 years - people there are well aware of flooding dangers - the Swannona River has caused major flooding in Biltmore Village and other areas within its valley (like Black Mountain).

Well he should've posted a bill about funds to Ukraine to bitch about the dam not being fixed instead of a fricking infrastructure bill haha

You know .. how will these people vote?? They’ll scatter to where they can find housing I would think.
This is so so terrible for these people.

It is funny watching all these people talk out of their arse about something they know frick all about. We have a house on the upper end near Rumbling Bald and the dam is in the midst of a multi-year dam improvement project. It was being worked into and around the yearly drawdown/refill schedule. You can't just assume that everywhere is run like Louisiana.

You baws with your big trucks caused this flooding because of climate change. Get a Prius! Includes a Harris-Walz sticker!

Since you have a place in that area, any updates? I've heard unofficially that the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is completely gone now. Really sad to hear.

Just saw a picture of it. Totally demolished.

GTFO with that crap. Hatchett Creek (and many others) in Alabama has more flow than the Trinity River in DFW area.

Guess the Dam’s alright and not in imminent danger being this notice was sent out 5 hours ago. It’s really hard to discern hyperbole nowadays with social media

We live off Sweeten Creek just north of Mills Gap Road, for those familiar with Asheville.
I happen to be out of town, but our neighborhood was absolutely devastated. One house on my street is destroyed, dozens of trees down, and lots flooded basements. Thankfully I don't know of any injuries.
George - I hope you are well.

I think it mostly held, but there is a ton of catastrophic damage. The town of Chimney Rock is pretty much gone.

Not contending this. But dramatic captions and headlines to farm impressions has really desensitized the masses.

Anyone heard anything about the Cherokee and surrounding areas?
Haven’t heard from parents since earlier today.

It's more like a village with a population of 100 people. Hopefully they lived but haven't heard yet.

Imagine seeing this disaster about to occur and trying to use it to score political points. Did that bipartisan law passed in 2023 somehow change the damn dam that was built in 1925s design and make it less structurally sound?
First, imagine being so naive as to think that just because a bill is named "Bipartisan" that it is truly bipartisan.
House vote: All Dems voted Yea, all GOP voted Nay
Senate vote: All Dems voted Yea, all GOP voted Nay. Tie broken by VP Harris with her Yea vote.
Next, it was actually passed and signed into law in 2022. How much was even allocated to shoring up existing infrastructure, much less this specific "dam that was built in 1925s design" (which should make it a priority)?
And then finally, imagine seeing the law and being so blind as to believe any of those "climate resiliency" funds were ever intended to do little more than fund more Solyndras.

Hate to hear that for anyone.
We usually stay 2-3 times a year at a small cabin complex off of Sweeten Creek Road. Think it’s called Willow Winds, something like that. I imagine it took some damage.
