For points of reference:
quote:
Malaysia's Berita Harian newspaper also quoted air force chief Rodzali Daud yesterday as saying the plane was last detected by military radar at 2.40am on Saturday, near the island of Pulau Perak at the northern end of the Strait of Malacca and at a height of about 29,500 feet. The latest revelation has raised further questions about the Malaysian government and its national carrier's handling of the situation.
quote:
They're saying it was in the Strait of Malacca at 29,500 ft., but there's also the report that it was at the east coast (Kota Bahru) at 3,000 feet. Something doesn't add up with these reports of it turning around and heading back over the peninsula.

Perhaps I'm missing something obvious, but why are their searches limited to water? Are they that sure that if it crashed on land that someone would have seen it? There's a lot of desolate jungle out there.

I was just wondering the same thing.

I wonder if this plane was shot down after going off course.
It would fall under a national security threat but nobody wants to take the blame for shooting the plane down. This is my theory at the moment.
ETA: Who is going to allow a plane flying off course for an hour and allow it to reach land? I'm thinking communication was shut down etc..

China is using 10 of their satellites to try and find it so they're looking everywhere.

The Indonesians have been awfully quiet during all of this....

Someone wondered if something like an EMP could've been why all the usual emergency systems (like beacons and whatnot) weren't fucntioning.
Those emergency transponders are usually shielded pretty well from what I know, so it would probably take a pretty big EMP to do something to it.

Shot down, blown up, crashed....there should still be the emergency beacon in those scenarios.
Something's amiss with no emergency beacon.

Could well be. Might explain the complete lack of emergency beacons being mentioned.

Yep, this plane was forced out the sky and I wouldn't blame them or other countries involved keeping quiet.

I love this thread.
I go work and then come back every few hours to see what kinds of crazy ideas have come up next...

Assuming it continued on that WSW path, it would have crossed over Indonesia. And without radio communication, perhaps they saw it as a threat?

Seems like a missile strike would not have gone unnoticed.

Interesting theory fasho. I'd think the US, after 9/11 especially, wouldn't hesitate to shoot down a hijacked plane if they thought it was a threat to something sacred. Maybe something similar happened here.

So have the Italians.
The Indonesians have sent warships and aircraft to help search. What else are they supposed to do?
