Can't get over this pic. That girl is such a smokeshow. To think, this dude hijacked a 777.

Class C airports like Baton Rouge aren't allowed to land 777's.

But it could in theory land one. The runway is within minimums.

Also, when Baton Rouge truly closes, they don't usually allow incoming flights. I've been stranded in Dallas many times because of this.

I've also landed in BR when they stayed open a little longer in the tower to land planes coming in a few minutes late.

I'm also speaking mostly in GA terms. You can fly a jet GA, even a BBJ can be flown GA.
If this is what happened, they could have just flown it as a private plane the rest of the way.
Who knows.

no radio contact really needed then.

Guys, there would have to be some sort of lighting/radar guiding a 777 into proper landing position, not just a few flash lights.

it can be done

Some of the longest runways in the country.

But we are talking about actual manned airport towers as required by the class of airplane.

I agree it can be done IN THEORY. I never denied that. I was stating it would take a REALLY good piloting hijacker to land a plane that size in an unfamiliar area at night with no outside comm.

That would mean either the pilot landed it, or the hijacker has alot of flying experience and landed it in a familiar place and possibly had some ground communication on the way in.

At that point the story's getting pretty complex. Possible, yeah. Just not an easy sale.

why? and what is required by that class of plane? Much larger military planes like Globemasters land untowered. A 747 doesn't need a tower.
A tower clears the airspace for you and tells you what's around. No one in the tower tells you to "pull up" or "go around" that is only on naval carriers.
The pilot makes full discretion on landing the tower is only there to ensure the runway is for that plane.
If you are landing somewhere with no other planes, all you need are some lights and it can be done.

saying all of that, my theory is still mid air-breakup due to a missile or terrorism.

New possibility, any rogue aircraft carriers out there?

eta: uh oh, 30 minutes since the last post. I hope my bad joke didn't kill the thread.

What if the plane is actually a decepticon and needed to workers to fix its home planet, once it got over water it transformed and shot off into deep space. :mindblown:

It also directs you to the right landing strip based on multiple wind sensor readings that go WAY out from the airport - letting the pilot know where the headwinds, tailwinds etc are on approach so they can more safely and the plane. There are different landing approaches for various wind types like crosswind landings.

Again, I'm not saying it CAN'T be done. I'll repeat myself again. I'm saying it would have to be someone VERY SKILLED in piloting to do so with no navigation at night.

And here we go

quote:

Two U.S. officials tell ABC News the U.S. believes that the shutdown of two communication systems happened separately on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. One source said this indicates the plane did not come out of the sky because of a catastrophic failure.

The data reporting system, they believe, was shut down at 1:07 a.m. The transponder -- which transmits location and altitude -- shut down at 1:21 a.m.

This indicates it may well have been a deliberate act, ABC News aviation consultant John Nance said.

U.S. officials said earlier that they have an "indication" the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner may have crashed in the Indian Ocean and is moving the USS Kidd to the area to begin searching.
