I'd think an ADS-B attack of some sort would be more likely than network penetration and/or systems compromise. ADS-B for commercial air traffic is completely unencrypted (even though the FAA claims otherwise; all research seems to indicate the opposite) and can be monitored with a simple $20 RTL-SDR dongle. It takes more sophisticated equipment to transmit ADS-B to confuse the aircraft, but it can definitely be done.
Check this out:
Thanks for the info
The amount of expertise/specialization on the plane was pretty high. That's what makes me raise an eyebrow.
Knowing it's possible.
Knowing the means existed.
Knowing there were many on the plane capable.
The question is: Was one or more of them willing?

With one of these stuck in the cockpit window.
There are dozens of handheld battery operated aircraft GPS units, some have the capability of displaying information from instrument landing systems, but just a GPS guided approach would have been sufficient.
A friend of mine once ferried a old 727 with avionics issues cross country with an old Garmin GPS from his truck stuck to the window.

Watch it turn out to be some massive publicity stunt for a book or movie.
That would be a big bill to pay the search teams at minimum lol

Why wouldn't the navigational equipment on the plane be working? I thought the current theory is that the plane did not suffer any catastrophic failure/malfunction (in light of the new information being leaked by US officials about the plane flying for 4-5 additional hours).

I think he meant - no guidance from the flight tower which at night would make it very difficult to land.
If the plane landed, there had to be someone on board who REALLY knew how to fly.

THIS pretty much....and also my thinking was that if any of that stuff was turned on onboard, it would be traceable by ground radar.

it was mentioned earlier that some airports don't have anyone in the towers late at night and planes are able to land

I fly alot and have talked with several airline pilots (bc flying intrigues me). The ONE common denominator for safe flying, I was told, was having a good flight tower in constant communication during takeoff and landing.
I find it very very hard to believe that airports would empty the SINGLE most important position of an airport at any time.

If the airport is closed, why would they man the tower?

don't you think if this was a hijacking they would have had a destination in place with all means required to land the plane? i doubt they would steal it and not have a destination/landing site in advance

So anything new since this morning or just a lot of speculation still?

You serious clark?
Closed <> NO ONE assisting in landing

Only class B has towered runways at night. I think even BTR (class C)goes untowered at night. I know KNEW does.
You can control the lights by tuning into the radio and hit the comm button. A few airports are like this. In fact the vast majority of airports don't have towers.
Landing a 777 with lights wouldn't be that hard for a well trained pilot.
hell I feel like firing up FSX and taking the 747 on this route and checking it out.

They are all living it up in the Maldives.

One would assume. I'm just throwing out there the necessity of some form of communication if the hijacker was flying unless he was a flying savant.
The pilot, of course, could still fly it...just seems unlikely unless he was the hijacker.

Ahh... I was thinking more general... like... why would any airport leave their tower unmanned ever.
I would assume that if they intended to land the airplane at a closed airport, then they must have had somebody at the airport to work the tower.

nope...except "some" us officials think plane may have been hijacked and landed safely

Flying "nap" of the earth for several hours would have been a piece cake in that plane. Use the Flight Management Computer, dial in 1000ft, altitude or whatever, heading, airspeed, and just sit back with yours arms crossed.
Prowler gets it.
Do the 777's have ANAV?

i think the only way it would have been successful is if he or copilot was in on it
