At least one thing is known, the Malaysian government has to be the most inept group of idiots in the world. This has been a shite show for them. This makes Obamacare look like well-oiled machine.

Seems about right

Alright - I've looked at this Phucket track - and if true, that puts the plane at about 400 linear miles (unsure of the nm) from KLIA.
With no indication of the course, it could have been headed a number of places - anything between W and NW is India, more northerly of that would be Bangladesh, even more northerly (pretty ~350 degrees or more) is Burma.
If lost or disoriented, they could have seen the coast and thought they were off the west coast of Vietnam/Cambodia. The Phucket peninsula should have thrown them off, but they would likely have only seen lights at that point.
They would have been just southwest of Ko Racha Noi, if that 200nm NW of Penang (and I assume that is the Malaysian Air Force tracking station that reported this last contact with something that may, or may not, be MH370) is accurate. That would also be, more or less, crossing from the Malacca Straits into the Andaman (Burma) Sea.
More good news - the place is geologically very active and there is a "trench". Although the average depth is a little over 1000 meters, the "trench" is almost 4,200 meters. Only about 5% is deeper than 3000 meters, though.

This will be even more tragic if they were able to crash land relatively safely and people died because no one could find them for 5 days.

Good synopsis of official updates, although with the Malaysian authorities that is somewhat suspect it seems.
I'm going back to the shot down theory. Malaysian military is inept. Plane turned around due to loss of coms and was shot down. Malaysia is waiting for the US to pin this on Vietnam or China and just sit back and relax.

No. I'm saying the Malaysian Air Force is confirming they tracked "something" - may or may not have been MH370.

That would seem to give a lot of credit to a group who has yet to be able to identify specific radar targets from several days old radar......

Plane crash could be an attempt by terrorists to get a bomb into this trench, unleashing earthquakes and tsunamis on the entire region.

I actually like the shot down theory as well. It does make sense.

They need to get all their ducks in a row before saying a damn thing

Now we can start taking bets on which military shot it down.
I'm going with Malaysia.

This is just a very confusing and sad situation in every aspect.

Yeah, I think the Malaysian Air Force is just confused. They tracked "something" but just don't know what it was. Then they communicated that poorly, or something was lost in translation or mis-reported. One of the reports even speculated a discrepancy in the altitude - whether it was "1000 meters altitude or 1000 meters below last reported cruising altitude." Big difference. I think these reports have been mistranslated, or the communications reps of the air force can't decide on how to say that they don't really know what they saw on radar.

While they maybe the obvious choice, I'm going with the Chinese. They haven't been in a war in awhile and they need the practice; I think they're about to frick something up.
