The board of directors of OpenAI, Inc., the 501(c)(3) that acts as the overall governing body for all OpenAI activities, today announced that Sam Altman will depart as CEO and leave the board of directors. Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately.
quote:
Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.
In a statement, the board of directors said: “OpenAI was deliberately structured to advance our mission: to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all humanity. The board remains fully committed to serving this mission. We are grateful for Sam’s many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI. At the same time, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward. As the leader of the company’s research, product, and safety functions, Mira is exceptionally qualified to step into the role of interim CEO. We have the utmost confidence in her ability to lead OpenAI during this transition period.”

UPDATE: Now discussions to bring him back

The OpenAI board is in discussions with Sam Altman to return to the company as its CEO, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. One of them said Altman, who was suddenly fired by the board on Friday with no notice, is “ambivalent” about coming back and would want significant governance changes.
Altman holding talks with the company just a day after he was ousted indicates that OpenAI is in a state of free-fall without him. Hours after he was axed, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and former board chairman, resigned, and the two have been talking to friends and investors about starting another company. A string of senior researchers also resigned on Friday, and people close to OpenAI say more departures are in the works.

He was on Joe Rogan recently and definitely was upfront about the good and bad part of AI. This seems awfully suspicious that he was on the podcast discussing what parameters that need to be in place for AI to be safe a few weeks ago.

Over a month ago. I don't recall him saying anything outlandish that isn't discussed by literally every other person.

Is this the same guy that Elon said he didn't trust to be in charge of AI governance?

If you take the statements released by OpenAI at face value, Altman not being candid with them, I'd say there was clearly a disagreement over "Do No Evil" vs. "Make Lotsa Money", the question is whether Sam was the good guy or bad guy. I can see it going either way.

I'm curious to know, assuming Sam is truly the guilty party, if the issue was understating the legal risk they were actually incurring in training the LLM, or if the board of directors even understand how they're trained.

My problem is the "do no evil" people are not really a "do no evil" people. They just want control over which evil is propagated (think DEI and anti-racism, and the trans agenda).
Social justice people truly believe they are performing the highest good, but as we can see, that can make them completely blind to actual evil.
You can see this progressivism in its outputs. In their minds the default is their view and that's also the "do no evil" option.

BREAKING: Sam Altman has been fired as Open AI CEO
he will be replaced by the US Government.
They absolutely would not let anyone else have control of this technology.

You almost hope he was the one that was blind only because now since he's gone the next CEO could be the definition of bat shite crazy and this AI is no longer a tool we should use for our sake.

Microsoft practically owns them. Satya Nadella will have more say than the government.
