I would MUCH rather prep for worst case scenario and have it be a non-event that assume non-event and get worse case scenario.

We live in the lower Great Lakes region. The HIGH for today was 0°. The Sun is going down and it's -3° with a -27° wind chill. We barely have snow on the ground so it's just plain cold with no upside.

They just rebuilt that entire interchange back in 2003.
What I meant by that is salting. The flyovers looked like they hadn't been salted at all, it was a sharp contrast to the interstates themselves.

Just out of curiosity, if your wife was going from Germantown to the Fed Ex Hub, what was she doing anywhere near the 40/240 interchange?
She didn't, she got on at Poplar (Waze took her down Kirby Parkway for some reason). I just noticed that area because the two sites I was looking at had the stills from all the area cameras on one page and the unsalted condition stood out enough to catch my attention.

Been like a blizzard in Little Rock since about 2 pm.
It's sort of quit snowing here... never was blizzard like... and they brined the streets... or at least the major ones... so... so far... it's not too bad, other than it's cold as crap. It's 19.

All I did was state what the forecast says then extemporize on what that would mean. No idea why that triggered you so badly.

Ahh... gotcha...[
Poplar to Kirby Parkway to Knight Arnold To Lamar?
Or Poplar to Kirby Parkway to Winchester?
Or 240 to Airways...
I did a version of those every night for 4 years during college. Gee... guess where I worked. And this ain't nothing.... in I think 88 or 89 it got so cold the Hub literally froze... they conveyors in the freight offloading areas froze and we couldn't offload any freight to process for like a day and a half. On the upside, they did screw up my timecard and pay me for working 26 straight hours. Pointed it out to them and they ADDED like 8 more... I didn't bother pointing that out to them.

So pretty and so cold.
And quiet. That's my favorite part of a good snow....everything stops and it just gets quiet. Peaceful.

pouring sleet here. Think it's about to get real interesting

Sleet with the sun going down is going to make the streets interesting.

Kirby to Poplar to 240 then down 55 to Southaven because the company is putting them all up in a hotel and shuttling them back and forth while this blows through.

You probably deserved the extra pay from dealing with that.

I'm from very south Louisiana .. how can you tell if a road is salted from Waze? Can you literally see it .. like is it just a shaded area??

Posted on 1/14/24 at 6:18 pm to MemphisGuy
I know the area pretty well and yall have lost me with all the Kirby, poplar, knight Arnold stuff
Granted idk where the hub is other than close to the airport. Think I'd have just gone 240 to airways

About 35 years ago Shreveport had about 4-6 inches of sleet. No snow, no freezing rain. Covered all surfaces and was beautiful to look at but hard as rocks to walk on. The streets were terrifying, because with vehicular traffic it would slush up the sleet and refreeze into black ice. This lasted 3-4 days. At the time I was holed up with a 4yo and a 2yo who wanted so bad to play in the “snow” but it was treacherous to walk upon. Luckily we kept power, water, gas and cable. Only time I’ve ever seen that happen.

You and half the region, I think. I had no idea how big their presence was in the area until she started working there (had never been to Memphis before then).
If memory serves me correctly, you started out at $13.50/hr, get benefits, make equipment operator within a month, got you to $15.00 or $15.50, make ramp agent within another two months... that got you to $17.00... wasn't too shabby
I was employee number 91890. I guess that means I was the 91,890th person they hired.
Just got back from taking a drive to check the roads out, main roads like Poplar, Walnut Grove and 240 are okay so long as you stay in the grooves... Poplar Pike and the neighborhood streets... that's a different story altogether. Probably about 4 people here will know the streets I'm referring to.

Is the Mobile/Saraland area gonna get any snow/ice? We normally never do, but was just curious.
I remember one year when it snowed in Gulf Shores. That was wild.
