The greatest roman was jesus christ if you consider israel to have ever been a part of the roman empire and not just playing it cool til it was time to fight the war of northern aggression
Much like Jesus' other favorite state, the confederacy

Caligula would have risen to Governor of Alabama had he lived today.

Honestly? Probably Scipio Africanus. He was the best pure general Rome ever had, and he was far better than most on your list.
Crassus deserves no place in this discussion. He was wealthy beyond belief and threw his weight around, but beyond that, he exhibited no extraordinary traits.

His daughter and his granddaughter.....both Julia's .....were exiled. The first for performing lewd sex acts and talking shite about him in the public baths. The granddaughter for sex acts and opening her mouth about his succession plan with Tiberius. He was a very forgiving man but was deeply wounded/offended when those he felt the closest to betrayed him.

Purely in terms of badassery, yes. Julius Caesar rode a mule for ten years because Sulla forbade him to ride a horse.
But then there's that whole "liked to frick children" thing. I've gotta subtract a few points on that.

Agrippa was to Augustus as Bismarck was to Wilhelm. That said part of being a great leader is surrounding yourself with great help.
Augustus was shrewd and knew how to use his strengths and mask his weaknesses and was a very successful leader and a major reason Rome became the Empire it did.

Well, two reasons I can think of :
1- The thread started about Romans, not Carthaginians. (Though as far as I'm concerned, we can discuss Carthaginians too if anyone wants).
2- I think his exploits, as great as they were, ended up with his "country" defeated and a lot of the fields salted by the Romans.

Don't be silly.
The answer is Paul.

Marcus Aurelius was perhaps the greatest Roman emperor ever.

The stakes were higher for Scipio. Julius never went up against Hannibal.

Well, that wouldn't have been possible, and Hannibal's troops were depleted and physically beaten after the long marches. His famous elephants were replaced at a moment's notice and didn't have the training that they normally would have, which made it easier for Scipio's troops to herd and confuse them.
And in addition to his crowning victory, Caesar basically went on a continental European tour of asswhipping, repeatedly routing the hated Celts and attaining almost godlike status among the people.
I will say, Scipio's strategy was funnier. I've always wondered what would have happened if Hannibal had continued his siege and conquest of Rome, allowing the two armies to basically just take over each other's home capital.

would've been more interesting to read about in the history books. But I think it would've turned out worse for Hannibal.
