For the old dudes, it was. The guys that didn't take off were the "dependable" workers and they were first in line for promotions.
Completely different culture today so you aren't really comparing apples to apples.

Probably personal choice. I take vacation when freight is light and less busy for the job. No point in sitting in truck stops not getting paid when I can be home getting paid. Taking a couple of weeks off in January for rasslin and the Tool concert.

Nothing wrong with using your PTO, but schedule the PTO. Just calling in leaves your co-workers having to cover for you instead of planning for it.

Workers today are soft.

I've had older employees block off big vacations like 10 months ahead of time. It really does cause chaos. None of our capacity planning extends that far into the future, so I have to somehow remember this big hole in our staffing and incorporate it into my plans at some future date. Taking a day here or there is just better for everyone.

Wanting them to take the time off that they are entitled to when they want to does not equate to wanting to take part in their personal lives lol

It's pretty hard to take a vacation to Europe or something on a long weekend

This shows why you will never be nothing more than a worker bee.
That really wasn’t the point of his post.
A great company and a great manager understands how work/life balance is a real thing. Good workers respect good managers and things work out

My vacation policy is if you have it, take it. It's my job to keep the ship afloat and manage the resources. I also though have opinions based on the above who is invested in their job and career...and who skates by.
It’s real simple for me. The company gives you somewhere between 4-6 weeks. As a manager I expect you to take the max and I will manage workloads accordingly.
Everyone is replaceable. I do my best to set the example that you need work/life balance. I’ve made it a habit in our annual compensation review to bring it up. If you left PTO on the table, you worked for free dummy.
The caveat being, plan it around having back up for your responsibilities. Which when people look at it in January for the upcoming year, it’s not difficult.

Yeah, it's usually some shite like that. I guess if some guy who plays with servers and vapes all day wants to spend a couple of weeks pointlessly gawking at Slovenia or whatever, I just have to suck it up and find someone else who can vape / do servers.

I actually read "servers" as waitresses and was like damn for once someone in one of these threads admits they're a restaurant manager

I’m gen x, when I am at work I work hard. But I don’t give 2 shits about work when I’m off. The way we do our time off, you can only have so many people in my position off at once and it goes by seniority. So taking off I’m not fricking anyone over. I take off as much as possible. I don’t care if it’s to hunt, fish, play with kids in the backyard, or jack off. I don’t give 2 shits what other people do when they take off, they shouldn’t care about what I do either

My job is weird in the sense that it's a hybrid job with very "busy seasons" and very "quiet seasons." So, during the few months of our "busy seasons" you feel like you can't take off because you have so much work and you were relaxing during the quieter times.
And then, during the "quiet seasons," for the days you're not in the office, there's not much to do, so not really much reason to take PTO.
So, I end up not taking any PTO because I don't want to take it during the busy times and I don't really need to during the quiet times.

I have one guy, on FTO, who took 41 days this year. He's going to get a talking to during his review. That's way too many.
So why even have something called FTO if you get reprimanded for using it?

Oh look, some cubicle jockey thinks he understands how to manage people.
Step one, dont get involved with their personal lives.

I have a guy who cashes out all of his leave, I totally support him.

It’s only so they don’t have to pay earned pto out if someone quits.
