I wasn't trying to speak down about your son

You should be very proud of him and his accomplishment

My comment came out a little salty, I really didn't mean it to. My eldest required a lot of educational support, if you will. God granted him extra good looks to make up for it though. It all comes out in the wash.

What you describe is nothing new, unfortunately.

I graduated from the Haslam business school at UT in 2015. The provost, dean, and keynote speaker all separately gave explicit instructions to please hold any applause until all graduates are finished crossing the stage.

The white, Asian, brown, and Hispanic kids and families all follow the rules. The black families (not all, but I'd guestimate at about 60%) blatantly disregard the rule and yell when their baby crosses the stage, completely obscuring the announcement of the next name. There were two occasions in which the dean halted the ceremony to tell these types to stay quiet until after everyone finishes. Both requests were ignored. In fact, my good buddy was called after one of them and you couldn't even hear his name over the hooting and hollering.

Offended by everything, ashamed at nothing.

Graduation has become more than it should be. We celebrate graduating every grade now. My neighborhood is filled with graduation signs from every school. PreK, Kindergarten, 3rd grade intermediate school, 5th grade, 8th grade, 12th grade. Only one of those should use the word graduate.

I’m old. My oldest graduated from uk 10 days ago. I haven’t attended a college graduation since my own.

A black female graduating senior was chosen to sing the national anthem. She had a powerful voice. Two thirds through, without skipping a beat, she starts singing something else with her fight the power fist in the air.

I don’t know things. My youngest was sitting next to me. I asked him if that was the black national anthem. He said it was about Gaza.

Without skipping another beat, she returned and finished the national anthem.

I was hoping that I might run into her after the ceremony so that I might share my political views with her undivided and captive attention.

Just selfish.

We were behind this family for my son's Junior Ring Ceremony (yes- not even a graduation). No air horns, but they squealed and carried on until that damn kid was back in his seat. So very obnoxious.

To me, if it's the last stop (highest grade) offered at the school, it's a graduation. 5th Grade, 8th Grade, 12th Grade. My kids went to the same school from Pre-K - 8th Grade, and I wanted to totally skip Kindergarten graduation. They even made us order tiny caps/gowns, which is ridiculous since they have a set for 8th Grade Graduation. It obviously bothers me since I'm still talking about it days before my youngest daughter's 8th Grade Graduation

I know they likely wouldn’t follow them, but does LSU have posted rules that explicitly state noise makers and airhorns are not allowed? Besides that rule along with any other items each specific arena has banned for special events the clear bag policy is used (or at least stated as policy) for some graduations in Texas which in theory could catch some noise makers being brought in but not anything that fits in pants or jacket pockets.

It still seems like the noise maker stuff is mostly on the honor system which doesn’t work with many black families in these situations. I also think some of them purposely make it worse knowing how it annoys others. For some it seems like being annoying is empowering to them, and others are looking to play race card or for a confrontation with white people. I have seen a lot of blacks slow down on cross walks and while walking in store parking lots blocking traffic due to both their widths & walking side by side when they notice a car is waiting on them.
