extreme obesity in most, not all, is no different than alcoholism. sugar addiction is probably the most intense and worst addiction in humanity.
obese people don't want to be obese. food addiction leads to depression which leads to food addiction which leads to being obese. (I'm not talking about the folks that are 20lbs over weight)

I was reading a cool double blind study that showed gastric bypass surgery was twice as effective for losing weight long term and keeping it off vs weight loss drugs and trying to eat right.
Thinking I might try that.

CONCLUSIONS Five-year outcome data showed that, among patients with type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 27 to 43, bariatric surgery plus intensive medical therapy was more effective than intensive medical therapy alone in decreasing, or in some cases resolving, hyperglycemia. (Funded by Ethicon Endo-Surgery and others; STAMPEDE ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00432809. opens in new tab.)

Kige ( I mean, I agree with this. I'm not calling Kige obese)

Exactly my predicament. I had a very hard time putting on weight when I was young. Think I graduated from HS and was 6 feet and weighed about 150 pounds. Always wanted to get to 190. Well I blew right past that all the way up to almost 250 by my mid 30s. Now I hover between 205 and 215. Would love to try and get down to 190 again.

This is correct.

Hey I get it. But not all of us who are fat are looking for excuses or trying to create a disease or disorder for our heftiness. I'm 6'2" 303#. My obesity was not caused by the "language" people used to describe me. I grew up eating every meal until I was "full". Was really active as a teen and young adult then I wasn't. Pounds came on quick. Yes, I didn't have the will power to change poor eating habits and I got fat. I truly don't understand this need to be qualified or classified and am more so confused by my fellow fat folk who have to have a reason for our fatness other than the will to eat less. Lose weight or embrace the girth.

They are wrong, but just sitting there mocking fat people isn't the answer either. I'm not fat, but I do stress eat like a mofo (yay a billion different anxiety disorders), and it's a nasty cycle of want to lose weight, get stressed out, eat because I'm stressed, realize I'm stress eating and get pissed off at myself, and eat again to deal with that stress.

change the eating paradigm (including the food pyramid)
It's interesting that you mention the Food Pyramid because since the introduction of the Food Pyramid in schools, the average weight of the American male has increased by 25+ lbs, and over 30lbs for females. Type 2 diabetes has gone from 2% of the population in the mid 70s to over 9% of the population today.
Pretty incredible how much the all knowing government changed the face and arse of America with a simple poster.

I have struggled with my weight for years and it is very difficult for me to lose weight now.As teenager and up to 40 I yo-yo’d between 165 and 175 Since 40 I have creeped up to 220(29 years).
My wife has weighed 108 last 50 years and loses weight least illness.
Once we had flu together, she lost 5 lbs. and I didn’t lose any.She had hysterectomy,no solid food 3 days and lost 8 lbs.I had foot of my colon removed, had tube in my nose 5 days,no solid food for 3 weeks and only lost 8 lbs.I suppose I messed up my metabolism with all my years of yo-yo ing my weight.
People like me had an evolutionary advantage in the Stone Age with times of famine and times of plenty.I would have survived, she wouldn’t have made it.

Just taught this lesson in stats. Study is bs (obviously but let me have my moment). In order to show a true correlation you need two quantitative variables. You can't quantify will power so you can't truly determine a correlation one way or another.

shite, I haven't eaten anything with added sugar for over a year. Don't like sweet foods to begin with.

That's an extremely primitive assessment, but sure, it's mostly correct.

Then why do psychiatrists rely on them for workups?

Only lazy and incompetent ones do that. Clinical examination (filtered through a medical school education) is the gold standard for accurate diagnosis.
