I wonder how many people who stand against mask orders as restricting their freedom also are willing to force people to lose weight since they're a drain on society.
Just an interesting thought when you think about it. It boils down to telling someone what to do with their health/body.

I'm sure it's been shelved because of feelings.

Using State of La. Statistics, 13% of children between 2 - 4 are obese, 20% between 10 - 17 are obese, and 36% of adults in general are obese. This puts La. at #6 in the country. By contrast, from visiting my son in Japan, statistics there show 6% of adults to be obese. With a significant increase in life expectancy. Two things stood out: their dietary habits are a 1000 times healthier than ours...very little fried foods ( NO french fries ), practically no bread in any form, etc. As well, I saw large numbers of who we consider to be elderly people riding bikes, everywhere. They drink massive amounts of green tea. I was there during their national holiday season, was among thousands visiting their historical Buddhist shrines & saw not one person who even closely resembled those shown here in this thread. Diet & exercise seem to work & neither habits are mandatory over there.

I’m all for an obesity tax.
If you are Fat, you are costing society money. If the government is going to take care of everyone, fat people should be punished for having extra just like we punish rich people for having extra.

If you opt out of Medicare and Medicaid you can be as fat as you want. If you want daddy government to take care of you, sorry you can’t eat shitty food and watch tv all day and expect there to be no cost. You can’t have it both ways, the whole freedom argument dies when you say on one hand you are free to be unhealthy but you turn around and expect the government to take care of you when you are falling apart at 45.

What can we do to make America less fat?

Is it really cheaper than buying produce? Rice and beans are pretty cheap as well.

JBE out there saying he is ordering masks because it’s his job to protect public health but somehow has turned a blind eye to obesity.
The Louisiana Department of Health website was promoting free/discounted McDonald's if you got tested for Covid.
The dangers of obesity have been extensively studied and documented. "Believe the science", as long as it doesn't hurt my feelings.

Legitimate education early on, better quality food in schools, more programs promoting healthy living (especially within insurance companies/benefits), etc. And even more importantly, addressing nationally the largely sedentary lifestyles we live.
You know who tried to help with that.
Michelle Obama.

Quit charging $.50 for a cheeseburger and $7.50 for a salad.

Look at an old high school or college yearbook from the seventies or before. Almost everyone is thin. The few fat kids aren't even that fat by today's standard. They ate just as much crap as people do today. Maybe not as much processed food, but in the south, everything was fried at every meal. The difference being they were a lot more active. Kids walked where they wanted to go or rode bikes. Housework was labor intensive, as was most employment.

I doubt that. The average American eats out a lot more now. And the increased consumption processed foods can’t be brushed aside because it has made a big difference. People eat more junk food now than they did back then. Exercise (or lack of) is certainly an important factor but diet has a bigger role to play when it comes to serious weight loss or gain.
