re: NYU will offer free tuition for all its medical studentsPosted by Upperdecker on 8/17/18 at 9:47 am to RedRifle
This will quickly flood the school with many of the best and brightest from around the county. The student base for future classes will immediately become much more talented than it already is. I’d imagine a lot of students capable of going to Harvard and going into debt would rather go to NYU for free

It's already ranked #3. I think they're getting the best and brightest.

The university has reportedly been working for more than a decade to accrue the necessary funds to pay for tuition, and hopes to raise a total of $600 million (£472m) to make the scholarships available permanently.
They've raised $450 million of the $600 million so far, just for the medical school.
To put that in perspective, the LSU Foundation's net assets are less than $700 million combined.

Exactly. Now they’ll compete for #1

At $55k/year, seems like that $600mil could burn up real quick. Not that they can't get more, just thinking aloud.

Type Private
Established 1841
Dean Robert I. Grossman
Students 657 MD students[1]
242 PhD students[1]
68 MD/PhD students[1]
from Wiki page.
So would be roughly 36 to 37 million a year to fund it. With a 600 million dollar endowment, it would need an average return of 6 to 7% to run indefinitely.

I'd imagine a scholarship "valued" at $55k is actually cheaper to replace when the university endowment is paying for it. You really just need enough money from the endowment earnings to cover the costs to run the medical school, not necessarily the tuition.

I would hope this would lead to more new doctors choosing primary care as a specialty, but I have my doubts that the type of student that goes to NYU is looking to be a General Practitioner, even if the tuition is free.
Good on them for doing this, however. Shows that the government doesn't have to pay for everything.

$600 million would have around $25-30 million annually to dole out to students.
