American Adults Just Keep Getting Fatter

New York Times: Disgusting Fat People Everywhere
Everywhere I look in the beautiful South I see monsters. Why are you doing this to yourself? You can’t walk more than a few steps without heavy breathing. You can’t fit into airplane seats. You’re a disgrace. And all you’re doing is setting a poor example for your kids who will also one day grow up to be foul, smelly, gelatinous orbs.
The more socialized our healthcare becomes, the more inclined I am to deride your unhealthy lifestyles. Your boy Pecker is going to fat shame you into having pride again. Get a hold of yourselves.

American adults continue to put on the pounds. New data shows that nearly 40 percent of them were obese in 2015 and 2016, a sharp increase from a decade earlier, federal health officials reported Friday.
quote:
Public health experts said that they were alarmed by the continuing rise in obesity among adults and by the fact that efforts to educate people about the health risks of a poor diet do not seem to be working.
quote:
“Most people know that being overweight or obese is unhealthy, and if you eat too much that contributes to being overweight,” said Dr. James Krieger, clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington and executive director of Healthy Food America, an advocacy group. “But just telling people there’s a problem doesn’t solve it.”
quote:
While the latest survey data doesn’t explain why Americans continue to get heavier, nutritionists and other experts cite lifestyle, genetics, and, most importantly, a poor diet as factors. Fast food sales in the United States rose 22.7 percent from 2012 to 2017, according to Euromonitor, while packaged food sales rose 8.8 percent.

I wish they would start health insurance pricing tiers based on weight. The fatty uproar would be hilarious.

I wish I could join an insurance group of in shape non smoking social drinkers. My premium would be 10% of what it is now.

It’s nice. My premium is next to nothing.

One of my favorite statistics --- one that defines itself!!
Note kids, if you define something using a percentile, you can't follow it up by stating what percentage of people meet that percentile. The only information conveyed here is they may have drawn the percentile in the wrong spot.
quote:
The latest survey data found that American youth are faring somewhat better than adults. Among Americans ages 2 to 19, 18.5 percent were obese in the 2015 and 2016, while 5.6 percent were severely obese. (A severely obese youth is defined as being at or above 120 percent of the 95th percentile of body-mass-index for age and gender.)

I'll add the obligatory caveat using BMI to define obesity and overweight is a little off, especially on males. The data to set those standards was derived in 1800's France prior to weight rooms being a thing.
The line between overweight and obese is a little questionable (221 lbs for a 6'0" male). The line between normal weight and overweight is laughable (184 lbs for a 6'0") male. The middle of the "normal" category for a 6'0" male is 162 lbs.
If you happened to walk to close to a gym during your adolescent years as a male you're very likely to be overweight (just like 3 of the top 5 base stealers both the NL and AL this year). Work out too hard you'll be obese just like nearly every NFL running back.

I read that as having a weight that is 120% of the weight that delineates the 95th percentile.

It is truly baffling in this area especially. We have mountains, rivers, and all around great outdoors living, yet most males have bigger man boobs than Chaz Bono.

you see a lot of NFL running back physiques walking around on the daily?
BMI is fine for overall population statistics

It's easy to use the eyeball test to determine who's "overweight" because they work out. Most people don't fall into that category.

I don't think the amount of people weight training is significant enough to throw off obesity rates for an entire country.

All you people who talk condescendingly about fatties and sugar addicts, and brag about your keto diets and workouts.... you're all a bunch of douchebags.
I hope the extra 3-5 years you gain in old age by denying yourself the enjoyment of something as basic as food is all you hope it will be.
I'll take a McGriddle, ma'am.

Not only do we get those 3-5 extra years, but people don't get disgusted but looking at us for the previous 65-75 years.
Fatties have no respect for themselves, their families, or anyone else who has the misfortune of having to interact with them.

You are assuming that the populations for defining the cuff-off and that is being studied are the same.

It’s almost like there’s a middle ground. Like you can still be healthy and enjoy great food.
Eating a McGriddle is just lazy and fat, not enjoying the finer things.

You can eat a McGriddle. Just eat it no more than like...4 times a year.
Too many people are eating a McGriddle 4 times a week.

Disagree,
Waist circumference (using WHO guidelines of measuring at the widest part of the gut) would be better, and not much harder to accomplish. Here is one study showing it as a more predictive indicator of all-cause mortality than BMI
LINK
This is especially true on normal weight or overweight people with visceral fat that do not have the muscle mass to push them to "obese"
