This is fake news.
When I was a sophomore in college, we would all watch Days of Our Lives in the union grill every day. There was a plot line that lasted an entire semester with Doug in full bandages in a hospital bed and everyone good or bad (Franko, John, Lisa, Georgio, Jack Deveraux, Sammy, Laura Horton, Sarah Horton, Tom Horton, Anjelica Deveraux and Nico) sitting watch beside the bed while old DOOL segments played in their thoughts.
About May of that year, he died and some nurse removed his bandages in front of John and they discovered it wasn't Doug at all. They had mistakenly identified the wrong body after the car wreck/fire and Doug was really being held kidnapped in a shack in the woods of South Carolina, by Johnny DiMera.
That took another six months to clear up.

Uh, it’s the families job to ID the patient. Hospital staff doesn’t know the dude from Adam.

Did they (hospital) or the supposed family check the patient's birthday in the EHR and on the wristband?
2 patient identifiers.
The whole thing is negligent on the hospital side and frivolous/dumbassedry on the "family" side.

The guy cant speak. How do they know his birthday? How do they make a wristband?
When the guy who cant speak gets dropped off to the ER, they typically go through his belongings to see if there's a name. If they find a name, they try to see if someone with that name is in their system. Then you contact the family and have them confirm that the hospital has the right guy. (Lots of people use multiple names and birthdays when going to the ER- probably so they don't get billed.)
Yes, if you go to the ER for a drug OD with only a Sams card, they will look up you name in the computer, see what-15 people with the same name. If they find a patient profile that seems to match the patient (who already had a prior drug OD) they will call that number. When the family comes to the hospital and says that's my dad, they will probably stop trying to figure out who you are.

If you're trying to suggest there's no safeguard in place at hospitals to prevent this, that's a fricking frightening thought.

I checked the article just to make sure he wasn’t hit by a bus or something that would potentially make him unrecognizable. Nope. The guy overdosed so other than him being hooked up to machines and such you would think he would be pretty recognizable.

Probably have to provide some form of ID, but if the family thinks the guy is their brother/dad/etc. and positively id's him as so, how exactly does the hospital go about verifying it beyond verifying the family is who they say they are? DNA test everyone who claims to be the family of a patient on life support?

Depending on the type of accident that the guy had, it's possible he was virtually unrecognizable. If the guy was a similar size to her brother then it's not that crazy
