NYC Mayor admits 1/2 the migrants bussed from Texas fled city over 'fear' of serious crime

Adams greets border-crossers — but suggests most skipped crime-riddled city over ‘fear’

Even border-crossers are too scared of the crime-riddled Big Apple.
Mayor Adams was on hand for the cameras Sunday to greet the city’s latest busload of migrants being dumped here from Texas — only to be stunned to learn that the vast majority had gotten off before they made it.
Hizzoner said the immigrants likely bailed out early because of their “fear” of the city.
“We were led to believe about 40 people should have been on that bus. Only 14 got off,” Adams said at a 7 a.m. press conference at Midtown’s Port Authority Bus Terminal.
The mayor suggested that the most likely reason was “because of the fear that something was going to happen to them if they came to this location, people got off earlier.”
“And we are concerned about that because we don’t want people being dropped off [just] anywhere,” he said.
Major crime has skyrocketed in Gotham this year, soaring nearly 40% compared to 2021, according to NYPD statistics.

Can someone please explain to me why, in the 80s and 90s, people in their young careers, early 30s, young family professionals, etc, were desperate to leave cities and move to suburban places like texas, arizona, southern california, and other sunbelt places, while in today's world, people in those same age groups are desperate to live in cities again?
What kind of parent would rob their child of an outdoor life the suburbans and exurbs provide?

People are having kids later in life. People are having fewer kids. Live closer to work = less time commuting = more time with family. Desire to be close to restaurants, attractions, etc...

A city life can be good if those in power work to protect the law abiding citizens instead of the criminals. Different strokes for different folks, but all of them need a safe area to live in.

Meanwhile Mexico is openly complaining about all the Americans moving there.

I thought merit was based on results. Shows what I know.

Kind of off-topic from the OP, but go to Google Earth or Historic Aerials to compare suburban maps from the 80's to today. The Sunbelt is pretty urban today, and suburban commute times are much longer.
We may start to see some reversal of the trend though if Democrat DA's and judges let crime get back to 80's and 90's levels.

Illegals from cartel controlled shitholes in Mexico are more scared of NYC crime. Awesome. Burn that shithole to the ground

Even illegals fleeing cartel violence are afraid to live in NYC? That says a lot about liberal governance.

You're conflating two trends here.
The trend of 1967-1995 was, when raising a family, to get out of the inner city, away from violence, and seek a place with good public schools.
Around the late 1990's, the inner city started attracting young single folks in droves. Who the heck wants to try to live the young single life in the suburbs??? Three bars and required taxi rides everywhere, sounds awful. So they all went downtown where there are three bars on every corner, plenty of other singles, and no need to take 15 minute cab rides between bars and parties.
Most of my friends with kids are leaving the city in droves looking for greener, quieter pastures to raise a family.
