I started working is medicine in 1990, there's always been shortages... Just today it's much worse...

I'm an RT, and we're having major hiring issues because of shortages..

I have pts today, in the ED, that have been waiting for beds. It's a pretty common thing now.

Louisiana is offering to pay all child care expenses for a year for nurses because of the shortages. I’m curious to see if they extend this next year.

Spoke with a Baton Rouge nurse practitioner who is all about the masks and vaccines. She is pissed that she is being asked to work more overtime because of the shortage of nurses.

She can't seem to understand why. Apparently the medical profession will be left with useful idiots who know how to run tests.

My sister is a nurse/director for a home health agency, she said over Thanksgiving that all nurses in Louisiana have to be vaccinated by early December

Dec 6th is the deadline to have your first vaccination unless approved for medical or religious exemption. My understanding is the exemption, if granted, can still result in a suspension w/o pay, or reassignment.

Fed court hearing Dec 1st on the legality of it.

I saw recently where the Mayo hospitals will lose 8k nurses due to the mandate. Woman's hospital in BR will lose 200+

med-surg. Nurses don’t want a 7 to one 1 patient:nurse ratio. Also, imagine graduating with a BSN and only topping out at 80k with 30+ years experience.

This. They keep pushing education at many hospitals for “Magnet Status” this requires many nurses to have a BSN. Or higher. Who wants to be wiping arse on a Med surg floor at Midnight on a Saturday with a Masters Degree. So they’ve educated their way into a shortage. That’s one of many variables. Add to that you’re in Louisiana. The Motherland has many draws for me. But nursing pay will never be one of them. You have to live and work in BR or NOLA to get a decent wage and even then it is not good nationally. Anyone who can leave and chooses not to is crazy.

This and its also harder for ever to graduate BSN's in this state. I believe the average ACT score for Louisiana HS students who indicate they wish to go into nursing is 19. Trying to get those types of students through nursing school and passing boards is extremely challenging.

This applies to very few daycare centers… usually those with lower income families. I mentioned it to ours and they pretty laughed.

Have to appreciate how they are doing faux compensation/incentives.

"We are willing to give extra compensation for childcare!"

"Oh great, how much will I be getting?"

"Well, nothing, just free childcare to places you don't want to send your child."

"Can I just get the extra money?"

"Haha, nah we can't do that."

Yeah I don’t think it’s a vacation but it definitely is a way to make a lot more money doing the exact same job in a different location. If you are an untethered young person, I can see how that would be enticing.

Having a more diverse (men and women) in nursing would probably help but men are drawn away from nursing bc of the stigma of what a nurse should look like

I know a few guys who live in Lafayette and take travel nursing gigs in Baton Rouge, they can still live at home and make twice as much money as they would if they were just staff nurses here in Lafayette.

You’ll take your Medicare for all and you will like it

As soon as hospitals are bankrupt the government can step in and buy them all

I thought this at first but actually found out the opposite to be true. They actually pay for home child care as well and up to around $160 a week per child.

Home care may be covered but Learning centers, where my kids attend school, are not. Only type 3 daycares are eligible…

Type 3 is:

Type III Child Care Centers are early learning centers that directly or indirectly receive some state or federal funding to support the needs of publicly-funded children. The Childcare Assistance Program (CCAP) helps make child care affordable for low income, hard-working Louisiana families. ...

Unless you are unvaccinated, then you can go home and google the treatment

Kind of along the lines of public v private v parochial

Just because the daycare is public doesn't make it subpar, but it does limit your options.
