Nurse Shortages in Nola Metro? If There Is One, How Bad Is It?

Recently we had an elderly family member need to go to the hospital bc of shortness of breath and weak heart rate. Long story short, she needed to wait in the ER for about a day prior to a bed opening up in the hospital (EJGH in Metairie). The reason for the wait we were told was that they had a nurse shortage. To be honest, I’m not sure if waiting in the ER for a day is normal or not but the hospital told the family that they didn’t have the staff to move her.

How common is this Nola metro now or is this just a specific EJGH problem or is this even a problem at all?

I say this bc the big uproar was how Covid was overloading the hospitals in July but yet now with only 32 Covid patients in Nola Metro and 194 statewide there is a major metro hospital telling patients that there additional wait times bc of a staff shortage.

If I recall, there was a nursing shortage before Covid. Add off the stress of Covid, and Brandon’s bullshite, even worse.

That's because a big portion of the staff has either quit or been fired over the vaccine mandates

Nurses are also being paid crazy wages from your tax dollars if they travel to “Covid hot spots”.

All expenses paid vacation on your dime.

I believe poor human capital management is probably also to blame. I would imagine a lot of retirement eligible folks probably called it a career in lieu of having to deal with this Covid mess.

Not worth the extra money to work in a hospital. shite hours, shite patients, shite family to deal with.

My understanding is that hospital administrators have increased significantly over the years to deal with all the nuances of insurance/healthcare system. Is just not having enough $ to go around part of the problem?

It’s hard to get people to work med-surg. Nurses don’t want a 7 to one 1 patient:nurse ratio. Also, imagine graduating with a BSN and only topping out at 80k with 30+ years experience.

It is a field dominated by women. News flash: a lot of women really don’t want to work very hard/long.

The shortage is so bad that the nurses can only do 1 tik tok dance per shift.

If you consider a vacation working 40+ hours a week, yes. Travel nurses do make jack, though.

I know that no matter the outcome of my health issues I am done with my Medical career. Ungrateful, uncooperative patients, poor management of organizations, cost cutting to max profit over outcomes, etc., all led me to this decision just about the time Wu Flu became a thing. Nope, can't pay me enough to go back.
